I am currently running Exchange 2000 SP3 on a Windows 2000 SP4 server that is acting as a Domain Controller.  I have just purchased a few new servers (windows 2003) that I am going to setup as Domain Controllers for my network.  My question is do I need to make any special precautions if I demote the Exchange 2000 server that is currently acting as a DC in the network?  Can I just demote the Exchange 2000 SP3 server using the DCPROMO command like I would any other server?  If so, then do I need to make any speical changes on the Exchange 2000 server after it is no longer a DC?  Are there any specific settings within Exchange 2000 that I will need to change after I implement the new DC's in the network?

DO NOT DEMOTE THE DC WITH EXCHANGE! This is not a supported action by Microsoft and it will surely get you into trouble.

Microsoft also recommends that you should configure an Exchange server as a DC; however, people do.  What are the possible issues I may face if I do demote the Exchange server?

Yes but there is a difference between not recommending and not supporting. Running Exchange on a DC works perfectly well in smaller environments and there a just a few things to be aware of (see this post: http://forums.msexchange.org/m_1800385488/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#1800385737)

However demoting a DC with Exchange on it can make you lose Exchange functionality and therefore is not supported and certainly not recommended.

Will I be able to move my current Exchange 2000 SP3 mailboxes (store) that is located on a server that is also a DC, to a new Exchange 2003 (Windows 2003) server that will not be acting as a DC?  Are there any issues related to this type of move?

But can this be done on an Exchange 2000/2003 implementation that was once a DC.  For example, what if my current Exchange 2000 server crashed and I had to restore from backup; however, I decide to restore to a new server that I will not setup as a DC.  Would create a problem when I go to restore?  Will I need to make the new Exchange server a DC since the store that is being restored was installed on a DC?
