Hi, I've done something really stupid. We're trying to get rid of an old Windows 2000 server with Exchange installed on it. A couple of months back I installed a new machine with Windows 2003, transferred all the DC roles, installed Exchange on it, moved all mailboxes and replicated all public folders.. Now that the old 2000 server was sitting there in a corner for the last couple of months I wanted to demote the server and so I did. The only thing is that I 'forgot' (how stupid can a person be) that Exchange was still running on it. So, I want to get remove Exchange of the old 2000 server, but Exchange won't start any more on the 2000 server since I demoted the DC. I know that normally Exchange doesn't need to run on a DC, but I've read that when Exchange is installed on a machine it doesn't like any DC promo or demote. Any ideas on what to do to get Exchange 2000 properly removed from the domain?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/260378 will help you drag the Exchange server out manually. Use ADU&C and ADS&S to tear the old DC out. Use: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498 to help. It's all a matter od cleaning up really, once the box has gone the DC/Exchange server (after a reboot) will get a grip of itself.

you will also need to remove exchange from the AD database. See below link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833396
