I have a new request from my boss due to a user accidentally being bad last week. We dont want to restrict people from sending to a specific distribution group however we would like to restrict them from "replying" to it. So say if someone sends an email to this group thats ok, however if someone tries to REPLY to that email then they cant. Is there some way in exchange i can restrict that?

Don't think you can. A message is a message, it just happens to have RE in front of it. "Mr 4x2" is usually sufficient to prevent a 2nd occurence of the event but I'm not sure how you'd prevent a first.

That is correct. We dont care if people send messages to it, we simply dont want all the extra mail and traffic that people can reply to messages with. Often the users do it inadvertantly and this will simply aid in preventing that. The one user that does it to abuse it has already been restricted from using it.

Try to perform these steps:

  1. Go under ADUC
  2. Properties of the DG
  3. Disable the option for Send Delivery Reports
  4. For SELF under the Security Tab, set Attribute for Send to as "Deny"

Let us know whether it works for you...

@josh: you may want to have a look at what MSFT describes those options which you have suggested.

Delivery reports options
  • You can determine how non-delivery reports (NDRs) are handled for a distribution group. Select one of the following options.
    • Send delivery reports to group manager   Select this option to send an NDR to only the distribution group manager.
    • Send delivery reports to message originator   Select this option to send an NDR to the message sender.
    • Do not send delivery reports   Select this option to prevent the sending of NDRs.
Ref: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb629517(EXCHG.80).aspxI second Mark - there is practically no way (known to us) that would stop the reply-to-all option for an email received from DG.

Reply-to-all option is used as equivalent to any email received from xyz user / contact / public folder. How would message store differentiate it from a DG.

If any scripting GURU can think other wise, please post the solution. I am adding this thread to my fav list - if we do find an answer.

Yea this is what i was thinking as well that in order to block reply's you have to block sends as well. For now we will just have to use education and warning to keep people from doing it. If that doesnt work then we will just have to start being "evil IT admins" and only allow certain people to send to all or have them send us the message and we send it out.
