I am currently testing my complete win2000 upgrade process I have my exch5.5 talking via the ADC to the domain and am now at the opint wher i will bring my exch2000 server up into the domain.

My question is shoudl i install this on just a standard server or make the server that my exch 2000 will live on a domain controller (via dcpromo.exe b4 i install exch2000). Yes I know about the ldap port issue and its not a big deal for me.

What is the smother longterm solution running Exch 2000 on a member server or on a dc ??

I had to make my machine a Domain Controller to install Exchange 2000 correctly. I tried it without first but Exchange could not locate the Global Catalog on the first domain controller.

You can put it on a member server... however make sure that dns is configured properly, and then create a site object in AD Sites and Service that is attached to a subnet object. This should clear up the problem... in the long run it will be better to have exchange on a seperate server do to the point that in a high end production environment you might not want the exchange server hosting mail and authenticating users...
