Hello all:
I have just completed the install on my domain which is 2 different sites with a DC in each site. Site one (Schema Master/Global Catalog), is xxx.xx.1.x, site 2 is xxx.xx.2.x.  I only see the DC of site one in the Exchange organization.  Is this a problem?  Should I see both DCs?

Is the other DC also a GC? Exchange will only talk to GCs.

Simon.

Simon:
Thanks,  the other DC is not a GC DC.  Do you see any reason where there would be an issue with the remote site talking to Exchange with this network infrastrucure?

Performance of Exchange over a WAN link will suck. Exchange talks to the domain controllers a lot, it is probably the heaviest user of Active Directory. Therefore if the global catalog is on the other side of the WAN you will see a performance hit as Exchange pulls the information across on the wire. Make the domain controller a global catalog - it will help.

Don't forget that authentication of clients only occurs to GCs. Your domain controller in that remote location is close to useless at this time, as authentication is going across the WAN link as well.

Simon.

Thanks for the advice.  I will make the remote DC a GC server.  Btw, I do have a 10 mb dedicated Ethernet WAN.

A WAN is still a WAN. Doesn't matter how fast it is.
Network design isn't just about speed.

You lose that connection because someone puts a spade through a wire all of the machines on the other end of the WAN will be dead in the water - including Exchange.

Simon:
Both DCs are global catalogs, however I still only see the one DC, which is in the same location as the Exchange box.  The event logs shows Exchange sees both DCs.  Please advise.

Thanks

Exchange will talk to the first domain controller to respond.
Are you using sites and services in AD to manage the connection?
What does the server use for DNS? Both servers, just one?

Simon.

I am using sites and services and Exchange is using the NICs DNS servers, which is configured to use DNS servers.

Are the sites and services configured correctly? With the relevant servers in the correct places? This looks to be an AD issue, as opposed to an Exchange issue and I will readily admit that my AD skills are basic.
