After I installed the first 07 server all mail was flowing through my 03 bridgehead which I know is the default. I tested mail flow from 03 to 07 and back. I setup journaling (store) on 07 as it is on 03 and again all was well.

I then added send and receive connectors in 07 so that it could send and receive from the internet. The issue is now 03 to 07 and 07 to 03 emails are being journaled twice.

I removed the new send and recieve connectors and am now back to one journal entry.

Questions:
1. Is this normal?
2. If it is how can I have 07 send to the internet? I do not see a way to add more than the one 03 bridgehead.

Do you have SMTP connectors in Exchange 2003 ? If not then you should.
Create an SMTP Connector in Exchange 2003 and set its scope to Org Wide. That will replicate to the Exchange 2007 server as a send connector. You should have two receive connectors already - a Default one and a Client one.

I had an SMTP (Org Wide) connector in 2003 before I installed 2007. I do see that as a send connector in 2007 but as I said 2007 is sending all mail through 2003 to get to the internet.

I thought I should go to 2003 and add the 2007 server as a local bridgehead on that connector which would solve the issue if it were an 03 box but that is not an option.

I presume that you have seen this article on Technet:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997918(EXCHG.80).aspx

Do you have anything scanning the SMTP traffic, that shouldn't be?

Simon.

I read this article and from what I see 03 to 07 and 07 to 03 emails should only be journaled once. Is that correct?

If that is correct do you have any ideas as to why emails from 03 to 07 or 07 to 03 would be jounaled twice.

07 and 03 are journaling to different addresses.....again if I sent an email from a user on 03 to a user on 07 it journals to both journal accounts. The same goes for if a user on 07 sends to a user on 03.

That was why I asked if you had anything scanning the traffic. Something that changes the message so it triggers a second journaling action.

Nothing is scanning the traffic between servers. I have my production domain setup in a test environment minus antivirus. It is an exact copy of everything (VMWare rules)!!

Are you saying intra org (03 to 07....07 to 03) emails should only be journaled once?

As far as I can tell, as long as the object hasn't been changed (ie the header is removed) then the content should not be journaled twice. That is the point of the journal headers that the article I pointed to refers to.

I figured it out

Since 07 envelope journals I had 03 and 07 pointing to different journal accounts. When I pointed them to the same journal account I only get one journal entry.

One would think it could handle what I was trying to do.

Now my only option is to turn on envelope journaling for 03.
