Drive M basically is a virtual drive of the same hardrive where your exchange server is installed. Therefore if you move the installation of the exchange server to another bigger partition, drive M will have more space.

If you keep the databases, streaming files and transaction log files in the same partition where exchange is installed you could move them safely to another partition saving free space on the hard disk.

To move the database and streaming file you must:
1.open exchange system manager snap in
2.expand till you see the information store (both private and public)
3.Go to the properties of each information store
4.Select the database tab
5.Choose a new path for the edb file and for the stm file.

To move the transaction log file you must:
1.open the exchange system manager snap in
2.expand till the first storage groups
3.go to the first storage group properties
4.Change the system path location to a proper one.

Hi Robert, DaDough!

What if I run Exchange setup again and point the installation path to the much bigger partition? what do you think will happen? How about the mailboxes and the emails will it be deleted or erased? thanks.

There's no need to reinstall! Just follow Robert's instructions to move the databases. When you select a new path and click OK, Exchange will ask you if it can temporarily dismount the store to move it's database files. If you answer yes the store is dismounted and Exchange starts to move the files. I recently did this on our server (moved databases to RAID5 partition) and it took less than a minute for the public folder (~100MB) and something like 10-15 minutes for the private folder (~4.5GB). I don't know the exact amount of time as I had a cup of coffee during the process [Smile]

So, basically, just use the built-in functions to move databases. It's really easy! It will take some time during which your users will not be able to access the store that's being moved, but everything should be up and running fine again quite quickly. But as always, make a full backup of your system before you start.

Regards,

Johan

Well, basically you can store the files wherever you like. Assuming your new partition is labeled E: you can store the at the root level by entering just E: in "change path dialog", or for reasons of clarity, recreate the standard Exchange search path by creating the folder path E:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA and store the files there. It really doesn't matter, Exchange just store the files in the directory you specify.

So to answer your question directly: No, you don't *need* to create folders. If you specify E:\ as the new destination, that's where the files will end up. If you want them somewhere else, create the necessary folders on E: and choose the new path as destination.

It is NOT wise to do anything to drive M. DON'T TOUCH IT. It is nothing move than a virtual drive for Web Store (.stm). Move your databases, log files via ESM. I suspect your "drive M" is running out of space because you are not backing up your E2k box, thereby purging logs, or you have a product like Norton CE on box, and your scanning "drive M" and/or exchsrvr\mdbdata directories. Unless properly configured, Norton CE will destroy E2k databases.
