Current setup: 2 servers, 25 users. oldServer1 = win 2000 server, domain controller, global catalog, file share, etc. oldServer2 = win 2000 server, MEMBER SERVER, exchange 5.5, DNS in primary text mode ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Want to replace both servers with brand new 2003 servers. Let's call them new-server1 and new-server2. svr2 will run exchange 03. I already went ahead with adding in new-server1... It's up and running along with oldserver1 still. Now I want to put in the replacement for oldserver2 with exchange 03. I beleive i can just run exdeploy on new-server1 but am just a little confused as to how it's going to work with oldserver2 being a member server and not a domain controller. Am i worrying about nothing?

A bit of clarification needed here. If you want to replace oldserver2 with newserver2, why does the role of oldserver2 matter? it is not a domain controller so it will not cause any issues. You are planning on installing E2k3 on newserver2 which will be a domain controller? it is generally not recommended to install exchange on a domain controller. Also are you planning on moving your mailboxes from exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003 once installed? How many domain controllers do you plan on having at the end of it all?

Thanks for the response... I was under the impression that exchange had to run on a DC... The only reason i would want new-svr2 to be a DC is for redundancy. Is there a bad reason for running e03 on a DC? Or is it just "not necessary"? Otherwise, I assume i join new-svr2 to the domain, then i can just run exdeploy from new-svr2 right? I am planning on moving everything so that it's as identical and seamless as possible.

When exchange is installed on a domain controller, it will only use itself as for domain configuration and will not contact other DCs. This is not a good configuration for exchange. Are you going to install ADC to move mailboxes and public folders across? How are you planning on migrating the mailboxes, distribution lists and so on?

gotchya on the DC topic, thanks. Exdeploy will run me through the necessary steps for everything, including running ADC and copying the mailboxes no? Is the exchange admin the way to go for copying the mailboxes?

I got through everything fine... ADC is all set up. Using the exchange admin, I transferred one mailbox for a user that no longer works for the company... it transferred fine... I would like to move the rest of the mailboxes, but i want to make sure i've got outlook web access working, and need a way to test the new server. When i open IE from the server and go to http://apcsvr2/exchange i get a username and password box, i fill them in and get access denied after 3 tries. I mentioned this to an associate and he says i need to put active directory on the computer... but why would i do that if I am not making it a DC??

just realized something. back to the 1st post... newsvr1 (the new domain controller) does not show the exchange tabs for each user in active directory... oldsvr1 does show them... if i open ADC on newsvr2 (new exchange server), i see a trust setup to oldsvr1, with no mention of newsvr1. and i did not transfer the fsmo roles yet from oldsvr1 to newsvr1 because i want to get the schema correct on newsvr1.

quote:
newsvr1 (the new domain controller) does not show the exchange tabs for each user in active directory... oldsvr1 does show them... Exchange tabs do not appear on any server unless you have Exchange System manager installed on it. Did you have that installed on OldSvr1? quote:

i get a username and password box, i fill them in and get access denied after 3 tries. When you are logging on, do you type the user name in the format DOMAINNAME\USRNAME? If not, then try it like that. Have you made any changes to the default web site on the exchange server? From the server, try http://ServersIPAddress/exchange. Also what do you get when you type http://servername??

ok i figured out all that other stuff, except the new web access. i tried what you suggested. If i go to the new 2003 exchange server at: http://apcsvr2/exchange login with: domain\username and password, it brings me to the exchange 5.5 server's OWA, which is http://crane/exchange Is this normal since i haven't got rid of the 5.5 server yet?

Are you logging on with an account with a mailbox on exchange 2003 or exchange 5.5??
