Help!
I can't get my edb file to drop by more than a single Gig every time i do an offline defrag. (eseutil)
We've been archiving to pst's all week and if i add up the mailbox sizes in Exchange Manager i only get 8GB or less as the total.
Yet our edb file continues to grow. Its as if the "white space" I'm apparently creating (by archiving) is not being registered for use.
I've spent 2 sundays on offline defrags and i don't want to make it a weekly thing. However we're still sailing too close to our limit.
stm + edb = 15.7Gb and rising. Store dismounted at 15.9 last time
Any ideas considered, no matter how drastic. Except maybe upgrading to enterprise edtn. How much is that by the way?
What does "run cleanup agent" mean? and is it safe to use?
Sorry, am a bit panicked after losing so much sleep staying at work to sort it out. (The buck stops here)
Any help is MUCH appreciated. [ March 23, 2005, 01:03 PM: Message edited by: charlieafif ]

Firstly no point doing a defrag unless you have whitespace to recover. Look in your event log for Event ID 1221, this will tell you hom much whitespace is in your database. Do you have deleted item retention set on your stores? If so even when a message is deleted it will still exists in the store until it is tombstoned and you complete a backup

Hi, Thanks for getting back so quickly
My event log has many entries for this ID. The latest one being today and it says
"the database "first storage group\mailbox store(servername)" has 8 Megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated"
Where is the deleted item retention option?
is it the "do not permenantly delete mailboxes and items until the store has been backed up" under the limits tab on mailbox store properties? if so that option is NOT checked

Wait!
there was (under that same limits tab) an option to keep deleted items. For 30 days and deleted mailboxes. For 2 days.
Thanks! I have now changed that to zero in both boxes
will the changes take effect immediately and purge deleted items it was holding? And therefore create some white space?
I really hope so.

It is likely that your database is holding onto items which is known as deleted item retention. Have a look for event 9535

9535 says there was some retention going on. That must be it.
will the space be recovered now that i've set the 2 options to 0 days?

Yes process occurs overnight by default and is part of the IS maintenance. You can change the schedule but little point as it is set as low priority and will terminate when the server is busy. Have a look at event 1221 and 9305 tomorrow.

Sorted
(i think) event ID 1221 shows a grand total of 4778MB free space after an online defrag.
I guess that means my files (although they're 15.5GB actually) won't grow for a while now.
Thanks again for all your help

That is correct. Just keep an eye on your event logs becuase if online maintenance stops for any reason or can't complete the filesize will grow.

What is that I can do right away to find out what is my White Space? I am not seeing the event except for 445.
Can this be done without dismounting the database?
Thanks

No you either have to look for event 1221 or dismount the store and run eseutil

Thanks a lot for your answer. What is the exact command to run ESEUTIL to find out the whitespace? Can it be done quickly on a 16GB database?
Thanks

I saw eseutil /ms too somewhere. But when I ran it it just comes out with lots of pages of info and nowhere in it I can see the white space thing.
Any other ways? Or anybody has tried this already?
Thanks

To see how much white space is in your Exchange database, go to the Windows server event viewer, to the application log and look for the event #1221.
