As you have stated priv.edb, I presume this is exchange 5.5.

The priv can be compressed using the eseutil utility with the /d switch. This is a defragmentation, which will remove any unused space in the database. Have a look through your systems application log for event entry 1221 which will tell you how much space you will gain.

A helping hand can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;192185

Whatever you do, do NOT use NTFS Compression, this will cause you to lose hair as exchange cannot use compressed drives/volumes for its databases.
