I want to enable pop3 on my exchange server.    I have 1 exchange front end server and 1 exchange backend server, both on the private internal network on the same subnet.

My mailbox resides on the backend server.   I enabled the POP3 service on the front end server.     What else do I need to do?

I started Outlook Express and pointed it to my front end server for incoming mail.    When I send/receive  it prompts me to login,  but nothing I enter works.

what am I missing?

What format are you using for authentication?
POP3 on Exchange has to be in a certain format

domain\alias\username

this is the error I get from OLexpress.    I know the password is good.

There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: '10.x.x.x', Server: '10.x.x.x', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

Alias you will find on the Properties of the user account in ADUC. It is usually the same as the username, but not always.

Can you telnet to port 110 on the Exchange server? The error that you have posted would tend to indicate the port is being blocked.

Simon.

Try a full telnet test of the POP3 system using telnet:

I tried the full telnet test.   I get similar results.    I connect to the server on port 110 fine,  it accepts my USER name,  but when I enter the password I get:

-ERR  No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

Is POP3 enabled on the account?
Is there anything installed on the machine that could be intercepting POP3 traffic? Some AV applications do that by default - AVG is one I know for sure.

POP3 is enabled, and we use McAfee for AV.    I don't think it is blocking anything.    I can telnet using port 110.
