We do routine backups of a user's exchange mailbox when he/she leaves the company to a .pst file through Outlook (2000/XP). Since we migrated our Exchange 5.5 server to a beefier machine (still running 5.5), every time I try to archive I get a message saying "Some items could not be copied. They were either moved or deleted, or access was denied." I'd like to resolve this issue once and for all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We have encountered this problem. Running exchange server 5.5 as well and using outlook 2000 (but also had problem with OL98). Microsoft did not have a fix for this and said potential conflict could be Norton Antivirus. The only thing we have found to work around it is to create the .pst and click and drag messages whether select all, or certain ones. Sometimes the error message will come up again but can retry and eventually it will move into pst. It seems to really be a problem when the message has an attachment. Hope that can help but I know that is not a true fix.

LilZ098, Thanks for the reply. We are experiencing everything you mentioned and have tried manually moving messages like you suggest. That's not an acceptable option here as some users mailboxes exceed 200mb. I'll PM you if we figure it out.

We had this problem. What we found out was that NAV for Exchange was conflicting. Symantec has a fix for this on there site. Pluse you may want to make sure your pst's are not over 2GB.

New Info: I have found that messages created after our new server was implemented move over without a hitch. Trying to move over messages sent/received with the old server almost always yields an error. ANYONE: Please post any suggestion you have. At this point I'm willing to try just about anything except for Microsoft's solution ("Upgrade to Exchange Server 2000).

I'm having this problem on our Exchange Server 5.5 SP4 with Norton Antivirus for Exchange 2.16, and the only solution I found was to enable Background Scanning, so that all attachments will be scanned when a new virus definition is downloaded (and NOT when the attachments are accessed, which seems to be the core of this problem).
By the way - to read more about this, go to this URL: http://search.symantec.com/custom/us/techsupp/enterprise/kb/query.html
and search for "pst".
Best regards, Lars Broens Christensen

Had this on our Exchange machines, We found we had this when we upgraded sp6a/Ex SP4 Plus Groupshield. On NAI site, found that you had to change a Reg setting & now works, HKLM->SYSTEM->CURRENTCONTROLSET->MSEXCHANGEIS->VIRUSSCAN->OpenRetryDelay (change this setting from 2 to 5000). As I said, this worked for us. Hope this helps.

Changing the HKLM->SYSTEM->CURRENTCONTROLSET->MSEXCHANGEIS->VIRUSSCAN->OpenRetryDelay indeeds works.
It also fixes problems with offline sync.

I checked out that reg key but the value was already almost 5000. I changed it anyway, but it still did not resolve our issue. I think this problem has us beat...

Try changing the mode for Nav for Exchange to MAPI only. This worked for us.
