Hi
In our internal network we have main domain controller called mydomain.com (192.168.1.100) . This domain controler act as file server, active directory user logon and software storage etc. This domain is already registered over the internet for our website.
Now, I have planning to setup Microsoft Exchange Server in our internal network. So I have setup another new Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition in internal network (192.168.1.25) and trying run forestprep on this new server but while running forestprep its encountered me following error :-
The component "Microsoft Exchange Forest Preparation" cannot be assigned the action 'ForestPrep" becauze :
- Setup encountered an error while trying to contact the Windows Active Directory. The error was :
- Failed to look up the Windows domain to which this computer belongs.
Please verify that your computer is in a Windows domain.
I guess the above error is encountering becauze I am trying to install new exchange server is internal network (192.168.1.0) and we are having already 1 main domain controller (mydomain.com) in the internal network (192.168.1.100).
I do not want to configure exchange as child domain in my existing domain.
I have planning to register different domain name for exchange server like (provon.com).
I am having single Sonicwall Router in my network.
Can anybody give me your thoughts about how to setup exchange server in above environment.
I value your thoughts on this.
Regards

Ideally you would login to the new DC as administrator (With Schema Admin priviledges) and run forest prep
on there as it would update the schema locally rather than from another server.

Have you joined the new server to the domain?

Presently New Windows 2003 Ent. Server is installed on workgroup mode.
I have mentioned in my earlier post that i do not want to make child and join new windows 2003 ent. domain in my main domain (mydomain.com).
I would like to install and configure exchange on different dedicated domain like (proven.com).
The problem was we are facing that having only single network (192.168.1.0).

I just want to know that is it possible to install two differnt domain in single forest.

Can anybody give me your thoughts about how to setup exchange server in above environment.
I value your thoughts on this.

Since Exchange 2003 relies on Active Directory it´s impossible to install on a stand alone server. It can only be installed on a domain member server. You have to start by setting up a domain controller for the domain, join a member server and on it install Exchange.
When you do dcpromo on the new domain controller you´ll have the option to create a new domain.

You mean to say that first installed new server as a member sever of main domain (mydomain.com) and then run the dcpromo on the new domain controller and during installation I will get the option to create a new domain then I can enter the new domain (proven.com) entry in that.

In this case is it require to run forestprep utilitity on new domain Or directly run dcpromo then start the microsoft exchange installation?

I value your thoughts in this so I can go to next step as i am stuck here.

Regards
Uday

You only have to run forestprep once for every forest. Here´s how, why and when to run forestprep and domainprep:

Thanks you for providing useful infomormation on forestprep and domainprep.

But still having 1 query which I coudn't find solution in your article.

Last 2 yrs back.....When I was installed my main DC (mydomain.com) ....I havn't run forestprep on that.
I have just run dcpromo and configured dns server on that. we are using Main Dc as file stroage and user logon only.

Can you please guide me on this. If  I havn't run forestprep on main DC then should I need to run forestprep on new windows 2003 server which we are going to use for mail server?

Regards
Uday

OK if you´re upgrading from Windows 2000 domain and want to implement Exchange 2003 you have to run adprep as well as forestprep/domainprep. Follow this guide and you should be alright:

I do not want to upgrading my old Windows 2003 domain and do not want implement exchange 2003 on the same. Actually when we were installing old Windows 2003 domain we were not run forestprep on the same. Now I have setup another Windows 2003 Sever to implement exchange server.

My question was if we never run forestprep on old server in this case should we need to run forestprep on our new Windows 2003 server which we are implement exchange or should we directly run dcpromo on new?

Regards

In order to install the first Exchange 2003 server you must first run forestprep and domainprep. In order to do so you must first have a domain controller up and running.

I was trying to run Forestprep in new Windows 2003 Server, while running Forestprep its gave me the following error and setup did not continue.

The component "Microsoft Exchange Forest Preparation" cannot be assigned the action "Forestprep" because:
- Setup encountered an error while trying to contact the Windows Active Directory. The error was:
- Failed to contact the Schema Master server for this Active Directory forest.

Following are the details which we configured before running forestrprep :-
New 2003 server as member server for Existing 2003 DC

The user who's running forestprep have following permissions :-
Schema Admin, Domain Admin, Enterprise Admin, Local Machine Administrator.

Can you please help to installing forestprep?

Regards

Locate the Schema Master and try to run Forestprep on that DC.
