I posted this in the general section and haven't had any feedback; I am hoping the folks that frequent this thread can help me out.

Top of the day to you all,

I have a question regarding the role transaction logs during a restore of an online backup. I have an online backup that I plan on restoring from that is a few weeks old, got a -1018 event id 474, and I have the logs that were generated since that backup. I would like to know if the transaction log playback will include data to the public folders/priv.edb.

I have searched and read numerous docs but can't seem to find an answer. Your help will be genuinely appreciated.

What about when using eseutil /r e00. What I am not understanding is when the recovery switch is used do the logs roll forward data in the priv and the pub? I really could use some clarification on this.

/R : Eseutil replays transaction log files or rolls them forward to restore a database to internal consistency or to bring an older copy of a database up to date.

ESEUTIL /R Recovery Mode

How to run eseutil in recovery mode

thanks

In regards to the logs, exchange does not create seperate log files for the databases. lets say you have 2 storage groups with 3 databases each (2 private and 1 public per SG), you will only have 2 sets of transaction logs. The transaction log files contain actions and changes that correspond to the storage group, not the individual stores!

If you restore your online backup of your storage group, the log files will be for both mailbox and public stores as long as you restore both databases.

When you run ESEUTIL /R e00, it will simply play in the log files in the log file location into ALL the databases that the transaction logs correspond to. But remember /R is not for a restore process.

Regarding your point about the /R switch.

would rolling forward the logs help correct torn page(s) or should I just go straight to the /p?

Thanks again for your feedback.

Well you can actually determine if the log files themselves are corrupted. With the Information store service stopped, go to a command prompt and change directory to *:\exchsrvr\bin folder:

1. type ESEUTIL /ML *:\path to log files\E00 (notice there is no extension for e00!!)

this will run through all the log files in that location and tells you if they are corrupted or not.

When you determined they are not corrupted, simply leave them at that location. after the restore, it will automatically continue playing in the log files in that folder.
