Hi all, I have Exchange server 2003 SP2 installed, and I had raised the capacity size to 50G inorder to supports my users that had reached that size together . I then saw that the STORE.EXE memory usage is over 600M and I decided to archive the messages into external .PST files. Because I merged, in the first place, data from outlook express and other .PST files into the Exchange server of most of the users, I saw that Outlook internal archiver wont work because most of the messages had been rewriten and thier last modified value is the same, and this is the field that the outlook internal archiver is using inorder to decide to archive a message or not . So I used Outlook True Archive utility to walkaround this problem . I managed to reduce the total mailboxes size of my users in the exchange down to 12G . My .EBD files still remains 40G and the .STM remains 1.7G . I had ran ESEUTIL /D on my database into a tmp file, but the output was still around 40G ( the .STM remains the same aswell ). I again calculate the size of total mailboxes using the server managment and it is for sure not more than 12G . I did try to use PerfectDisk 2008 for Exchange ( that uses eseutil aswell ) but came up with the same results . Any idea how to solve this issue or what is the cause of this problem ?

Before you do anything else, check your Application Event Log for the latest 1221 Event. How much whitespace does it report? That will give you an estimate of what you may recover by performing an offline defrag.

Hi Dean, Thanks for the quick answer. This problem had been troubling me for the last 2 weeks. All the archiving that I mentioned took place more than 2 weeks ago . After reading your reply, I started to reply back that I checked those events, and Im having each day 4 online defrags, and it usually reports that about 6m had been recoverd each time. But before I sent the reply, I decided to check again, and it seems that those events from yesterday night reported of about 15000m ( 15Giga ) . It is really wierd because nothing redical had been done on the exchange, but only yesterday, after more than 2 weeks the white spaces had been recognized for framenting . It is still not recovered all the space it was meant to, but it is a good start . Any idea what could cause such delay or how can I make the process faster ?

These are both configured on the Limits tab of the properties of the Mailbox Store. While you can shorten the delay by reducing the numbers, you'd also be shortening the time you can recover messages or mailboxes without having to restore to the RSG.
