hi

we have an exc2000 server which must be upgraded to exc2003, the server must be rebuilt (we are replacing our av solution and a clean build is ideal). Is the following possible.

1. remove old server from domain
2. rebuild with 2003 ent server same name as previous server
3. install exchange 2003 ent.
4. in storage group database properties, point to the old database.

easy?
cheers
David

I actually am in the process of doing this right now.... Currently I have exchange 2000 and 2003 running together on my network.

I would suggest the following. I do not like doing upgrades becuase you can Blow away your entire org mailboxes, office email down for awhile. I would suggest depending on you user volume is Bring up a test mail server. Load it with win2000 or 2003 which ever you prefer, (win2000 must be sp3 or later) and load exchange 2003 on the test server. Once this is up you can create an smtp connector and configure the smtp virtual server to allow you new test unit to route mail through your exchange 2000 box. I can give youa kb article on how to do this if needed. Once both are up and running you can migrate users from your exchange 2000 box to your 20003 test unit. What is nice since i have been doing this i havent had to manually change the location of the mail server on all the clients. Once all the mailboxes are migrated to the 2003 box take down you old mail server and reformat it. (dont know if this is the machine you are going to rebuild that you want exchange 2003 on.) Bring up your new server and run the same process again. This will accomplish zero downtime and will give you security knowing that once you take down your 2000 box you 2003 will be able to handle your mail until you get the rebuild done.

Randy,

Is the test server you're talking about in the same domain and administrative group as the first server? Also, what KB article are you talking about? Thanks...

Joe
