hi there,

we're just migrating from exchange 5.5 to 2000.
external mails pass an unix-gateway and then should be received and stored by the 2000-server. under 5.5 all worked fine.
but the ex2000 sometimes sends back all mails to the postfix (unix) and this one of course back to ex2000. "[Embarrassed]" )

the strange thing about that is, this effect is not reproducable all time.
sometimes it drops the mail because of too many loops, sometimes it finally reaches the correct mailbox (but header documents 3 - 6 handovers between postfix and ex2000) and another time it works all great, instantly finds its way to the correct box.. i always test with the same combination of sender and rcpt.

first i thought about an error in store.exe, because it develops en enormous memory-hunger. "[Smile]"
but as there is already sp3 running this leak should be closed. additionaly, the effect occurs also after reboot when memory-usage is below 50%.

any idea what could be responsible for this strange behaviour? played around in receipient-guidelines. but no success.

regards, gargarmel.

If Exchange is passing it back to Unix, I would recommend the following:
1) Verify that the SMTP Virtual Server does not have ANY smarthost configure or references to the UNIX server.
2) Ensure that there are no MX records for your domain that the Exchange 2000 server uses. This is specific to Internal DNS servers - not External (E2K should never point to external DNS servers within TCP/IP properties)
3) Verify that the intended recipient has the correct Proxy Addresses, HomeMDB, and HomeMTA values. I suggest checking this on ALL Domain Controllers.
NOTE: A mailbox should not have a Target Address. If so, this might be the problem.
