I would like to try an idea by installing exch2000
while keeping 5.5 running in the same domain Create the same users in exch 2000 and then Copy PST'S From Mailboxes in the 5.5 The only worry i have is would exch2000 work this way or interfere with 5.5 before i unplug it

There could be a good chance that it may work. Exchange 5.5 and Exchange 2000 ave both there own directory service. Exchange 5.5 works with x500 and Exchange 2000 uses the directory service integrated in Windows 2000 Active Directory.
You could use exmerge (found on the exchange cd) to migrate the mailboxes.
However you should test this in test environment before you try this in a production environment.
Good luck
