hello everyone, I have enabled recipient filtering and it works great, rejects any emails to invalid emails. I have also setup TarpitTime in registry. Now when you send an email to invalidemail@ourdomain.co.uk, a non delivery report is still generated. I tested by sending an email from my yahoo, gmail account and i receive a non-delivery report straight away. "This is the Postfix program at host xxxx.ourdomain.co.uk. I'm sorry to have to inform you that the message returned below could not be delivered to one or more destinations." host xxx.xxx.x.x[xxx.xxx.x.x] said: 550 5.1.1 User unknown (in reply to RCPT TO command)" When i untick "allow Non-delivery option" it does not have any effect and the above email is still received. The email from field reads MAILER-DAEMON@ourdomain.co.uk I would have thought when you send an email from yahoo then yahoo would notify me saying the message could not be delivered so from field would be mailer-daemon@yahoo... rather then our domain. I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure out this one out. recipient filtering works great but if ndr are still generated then our server would send spam to innocent people who's email have been forged. We have a netpilot vpn router. It looks like something is accepting emails and then exchange rejects it and which does not generate ndr, but something else emails the sender that user was unknown and message was not delivered. please help

This is the Postfix program at host xxxx.ourdomain.co.uk Your inbound mail first goes to a server other than your Exchange server. That is what is generating the NDR. The invalid Email message never reaches your Exchange server.

hi, this other server is that our ISP by any chance? I want inbound emails to go directly to exchange server so i can make use of recipient filter with tarpit time. I have puremessage which is processing spam emails. domain is with plus net and with following DNS settings: I wish mail to this domain to be delivered to my static IP by SMTP mx 20 mx.last.plus.net. Finally, the actual website is hosted with another company but i dont think that would have anything to do with this. I hope all above info is useful to help me, we dont have any other server.

You need to get your MX record changed by the domain name host to point to your static IP address. Remember an MX record cannot be an IP address, so you will have to get an A record host created first, then point the MX record to that. Simon.

hi simon, thanks for your reply. I have configured the MX record to point to static IP as suggested ensuring about the ip address as advice and unfortunately still no joy. I had a closer look at how everything is setup. The static ip address points to the Netpilot VPN router and the server with exchange has ip 192.168.1.1 and in netpilot configuration is set to forward incoming mails to 192.168.1.1 What i think is happening is the inbound emails are received by the netpilot and then it forwards them to exchange server, when exchange server rejects them, netpilot sends a NDR to sender that the email was rejected at 192.168.1.1 Let me know you think, i am having a closer loot at the router settings now if there is something i can perhaps do

Hello I was right, The vpn router is set to forward emails to exchange server via SMTP so when exchange server rejects them, the router sends an ndr. In router settings, i removed the ip adress (exchange server) under forward emails via SMTP. When i sent a test email to invalid email from yahoo, it worked and this time yahoo notified my that email could not be delivered. The good thing is that now i definately know that its the vpn router that has static ip address and receives incoming emails. the router than forwards the emails via SMTP to the exchange server. Its a netpilot V3, i am now looking at settings to turn off bounce messages because there is no other way around this.
