Background:

I want to move exchange to a new box and upgrade from 2000 to 2003.
The current server was and upgrade from Exchange 5.5 about 3 years ago
but we have no issues with the installation, we are moving primarily
because storage is becoming constrained and the box is end of life.
Current version Exchange 2003 Enterprise - New (target) version
Exchange 2003 Standard.
We have 2 domain controllers at this site (one of which is the current
Exchange server), and 2 at remote sites all of which are Windows 2000.
The Exchange server currently has the FSMO roles, which I have
transferred to this server using NTDSUTIL today
DCDIAG passes all tests apart from a few systemlog errors which I
think are a red herring.
I have successfully run adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep from
Windows 2003 R2 CD2.

Please note that server and domain names have been amended for this
posting.

The Problem:

When I run Exchange 2003 setup.exe /forestprep on the current server,
the installation terminates with the following error -
"Setup failed while installing sub-component Microsoft Windows Active
Directory schema update with error code 0xC1037AE6"

LDIF.log contains the following -
Connecting to "server"
Logging in as current user using SSPI
Importing directory from file "\setup\i386\exchange\schema0.ldf"
Error occured during initialization
File operation failure
0 entries modified successfully.
An error has occurred in the program

Exchange Server Setup Progress.log is huge but here are the last few
lines -
Exchange organization container found -- checking ForestPrep version
Installed ForestPrep version is 0; current version is 6903
This forest is not ForestPrepped
Leaving ScIsForestPrepped
Entering ScIsForestPrepped
Checking whether the forest is ForestPrepped
Looking for the Exchange organization container
Exchange organization container found -- checking ForestPrep version
Installed ForestPrep version is 0; current version is 6903
This forest is not ForestPrepped
Leaving ScIsForestPrepped
Entering CCompRoot::ScPostSetup
Leaving CCompRoot::ScPostSetup
CComBOIFacesFactory::QueryInterface (f:\tisp2\admin\src\udog\bo
\bofactory.cxx:54)
         Error code 0X80004002 (16386): No interface.

I have tried -
KB870829 - there are no spaces in my environment variables

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314649 - going through scenario 3,
ldp.exe returns the following -
ldap_search_s(ld, "CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=***,DC=*****", 2,
"(ldapdisplayname=dup*)", attrList,  0, &msg)
Getting 3 entries:

>> Dn: CN=houseIdentifier,CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=***,DC=****
        1> canonicalName: ***.****/Configuration/Schema/houseIdentifier;
      1> cn: houseIdentifier;
      1> distinguishedName:
CN=houseIdentifier,CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=***,DC=****;
      2> objectClass: top; attributeSchema;
      1> name: houseIdentifier;

>> Dn: CN=ms-Exch-Assistant-Name,CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=***,DC=****         1> canonicalName: ***.****/Configuration/Schema/ms-Exch-Assistant-
Name;
      1> cn: ms-Exch-Assistant-Name;
      1> distinguishedName: CN=ms-Exch-Assistant-
Name,CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=***,DC=****;
      2> objectClass: top; attributeSchema;
      1> name: ms-Exch-Assistant-Name;

>> Dn: CN=ms-Exch-LabeledURI,CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=***,DC=****
        1> canonicalName: ***.****/Configuration/Schema/ms-Exch-LabeledURI;
      1> cn: ms-Exch-LabeledURI;
      1> distinguishedName: CN=ms-Exch-
LabeledURI,CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=***,DC=****;
      2> objectClass: top; attributeSchema;
      1> name: ms-Exch-LabeledURI;

I am interpreting these results as meaning I do not have mangled
attributes.

I was thinking about maybe trying to run dcpromo on the new server which is
W2k3, transferring the roles to that and running exchange forestprep
from there, but I don't want to dig myself a big hole I can't get out
of, this is a production system.

I have hit a wall with this at the moment, any help greatly
appreciated, I would like to get this upgrade done over this weekend
if possible.

Many thanks in anticipation,

Ant.

P.S. I have also posted this at microsoft.public.exchange.setup

This has now been resolved.  I called Microsoft and they talked me through installation process.  It turns out I was mistaken in thinking that I need to run setup with the /forestprep and then /domainprep switches first.  What I did have to do is uninstall the Active Directory connector from the existing server, then just run the setup and let it do domainprep etc.  When finished, I installed Exch 2003 SP2 and am now in the process of migrating mailboxes to the new server.  I will decommission the original server once all the mailboxes have been successfully migrated and backed up.

Hi,

Ive seen this error many times durning installtion.

Importing directory from file "\setup\i386\exchange\schema0.ldf"

This usually means that you are running setup from "Network Location" or Bad Media.

Try running the setup using another media or just download fresh copy from somewhere else. Replacing just the schemaX.LDF file in current installtion will also do the trick.

Let me know further updates.

PD
