Hello, I inherited a job title and have to upgrade exchange 5.5 to exchange 2007. I would like to know what is the best way to do this. We are a small environment , with about 45 mailboxes totalling around 10GB of exchange data. Is exchange capable of being added to an NT domain, or should I have it set up in a new AD environment, new forest, etc.... Would users being able to access their mail, because they authenticate to NT for exchange 5.5 mail, files, print server, etc... Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Forget about your Exchange for the next few months. Exchange 2000 and up require an active directory. Exchange 2007 requires active directory in native mode. Work on your upgrade plan from NT to Active Directory. Exchange 5.5 will run in an Active Directory forest perfectly well. Then you will need to do something about putting a temporary Exchange 2003 server in and moving from 5.5 to 2003. Once you've done that you can go to 2007. You are so very far behind that Microsoft did not give you a path to simply go from 5.5 to 2007 like you could in 2000/2003. There is no "Mixed Exchange Mode" in 2007. Alternatively set up a brand new forest, recreate the user accounts, exmerge the mail out to lots of PST files. Set up the new Exchange 2007 server. Give the users Outlook 2007 and configure them up with the PST files you generated with Exmerge. You cannot exmerge into Exchange 2007. You will probably need a lot more help than the 30,000 feet overview so have a think, do some research and then post some more questions that are more targetted.

Hi Mark, Thanks for your reply. Your right, we are far behind, in last place. Can't I install windows 2003 server (does it have to be 32 bit or 64 bit for exchange) as our first AD forest and install exchange 2007 on that server (or that's not recommeded) and use a Connector for NT authetication to the AD exchange server??? Thanks again.

You can't install 2007 into a forest that contains a 5.5 server because there is no ADC (that's your connector of which you speak) capability. 2007 has to be installed into a Native Mode Exchange organisation.

Let's forget about exchange 2007; like you said, i have to install exchange 2003 then move up to 2007. Can exchange 2003 run in an NT domain environment or does it need also to be in AD native mode. If it need to be in AD native mode, is their a ADC for NT domain where the users would autheticate too for files and printing then use a connector to the AD for exchange 2003. I just trying to see what is the simplest way to do this, especially with DST less than a month away. Thanks
