I have configured standard journaling as follows:

Created a designated 'journaling' mailbox and assigned it to 3 of my 4 databases.
There was one mailbox that I did not want to be journaled (mailboxA), so I created a separate storage group/database and moved it there. I did not turn on journaling for this database.

However, mailboxA messages are still being journaled. Why is this mailbox being journaled when the database it resides in is not??

The article states what I thought was correct in that you have to manually link a journaling mailbox to a database. However, I specifically created a new store/database to hold mailboxA because I did not want it to be journaled, yet it's messages are still being sent to the journaling mailbox.

Try to create a new user in the new mailbox database that you have created and check with that. If it is not being journaled then you will have to check the mailbox A properties if Journaling is enabled on the Mailbox Level
