In running setup for forestprep, I'm finding that it will not continue because my DN name (org name) has a bad character in it...which is a period (.). A past admin setup the exchange org name to be a .com name. Now I'm trying to migrate to 2000 and can't find any simple way to clear this up other than rename the org which is quite extensive work. Does anyone have a work around? I would greatly appreciate any advice as I could just scream/spit that Microsoft would allow these characters in older versions, then disallow them during migrations! TIA, Pat

I had a similar problem last year with an org that had site names with invalid characters. You should be able to get round this by just changing the display name(s), which is a trivial operation, rather than changing the actual underlying name, which certainly isn't!

Hi Andy,
I tried this, but to no avail. Is there a particular place (property) in Exchange 5.5 where this must be changed?
TIA, Pat

What did you try exactly?
You might want to take a look at this Microsoft document which does mention this here [ September 19, 2002, 03:39 PM: Message edited by: Andy Hall ]

If from 5.5 to E2k, change the DISPLAY name for the Org in 5.5 Admin.

Thanks for the advice! However, I've performed all those steps given in the White Paper, including removing my Internet Mail Service and I still get the error message of an invalid character...sigh... Would it be easier to create a new organization in forestprep, then later use something like "exmerge" to move all my mailboxes/public folders from 5.5 to 2K?

If your org name is now valid and you are still getting the error, then I would check:
1. That the changes you made in 5.5 have fully replicated around your 5.5 directory structure;
2. Also look at Knowledge Base Article Q281658;
3. And Knowledge Base Article Q289671 [ September 20, 2002, 10:39 AM: Message edited by: Andy Hall ]
