In Exchange 2003 there is linking between 2 attributes i.e. mail and proxyaddresses. A change in one attribute will change the other. This is not the case in exchange 2007.
If i change proxyaddresses through any LDAP Browser the mail attribute does not get updated.
Exchange 2003 : Do mail and proxyAddresses have to be in sync in Exchange 2003 else will it result in some problem with the mailbox??

I am having difficulty understanding what you are saying.  The attribute "mail" holds the primary SMTP address of the object.  The attribute "proxyAddresses" holds all of the other addresses you see on the "E-mail Addresses" tab of the user object.  The two fields are not linked.  Making a change to one does not automatically mean the other will be changed.

'mail' attribute is displayed on the general tab if i am not wrong. proxyaddresses is a multivalued attribute that holds the multiple e-mail addresses including primary SMTP. innitially on creation as u said mail will display the same value as 'SMTP' (caps) value in proxyaddresses. in Exchange 2003 if i edit the 'SMTP' field i.e primary address in proxyaddresses then the 'mail' attribute of the general tab also gets changed.

When i do the same operation through the LDAP Browser 'mail' attribute of general tab does not get changed..!! does this attribute not getting affected have any effect on mailbox functionality

anupannaya,

Why are you making changes to the addresses? What is the exact issue you are having?

Correct

That is not correct.  proxyAddresses is a multi-valued attribute that holds all the addresses except for the primary SMTP address (which is held in "mail").  The E-mail Addresses tab you see in the properties of a mail-enabled object displays the contents of both attributes, with "mail" appearing with "SMTP" in bold caps in the list.
