Hiya,

I have a problem with an Exchange 2000 server (SP3), running on a Windows 2000 Server patched to Service Pack 4.

Basically i cannot mount the "Mailbox Store" or "Public Folder Store" from within the Exchange System Manager. - The error given when i try to mount the store is:

code:
An Internal Processing Error has occured. Try restarting the Exchange system manager or the Microsoft Information Store Service, or Both.

ID no: c1041724
Exchange System Manger

Several different entries appear in the Application log:
code:

While some people may now be shouting "restore from backup", having just checked the MS Backup utility that runs every night, it looks like it hasnt actually been backing anything up since mid 2003. Our day-to-day files are backed up with a script that copies them to a linux box on the network, the exchange server it supposed to get backed up via tape. Well, restore from backup is out of the question.

The next thing i go to look at is this e00.log, which i confirm does not exist. In C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\ i have the following files:
code:
03/04/2004 13:26 8,192 E00.chk
31/03/2004 09:29 5,242,880 E0001C7D.log
02/04/2004 01:15 563,224,576 priv1.edb
02/04/2004 01:15 501,227,520 priv1.stm
02/04/2004 01:15 205,594,624 pub1.edb
02/04/2004 01:15 501,227,520 pub1.stm
12/09/2002 12:02 5,242,880 res1.log
02/03/2003 02:33 5,242,880 res2.log
03/04/2004 13:26 20,480 tmp.edb

What happened to e00.log i have no idea. Yes, we do have AV software (Symantec Corp Ed.), installed on the server, but there is no record in the symantec log of the AV deleting e00.log or putting the file into quarentine.

Our Windows application logs have just been overrun with error messages like below, so entries from the day that i belive this file disappeared have been wiped off the log, replaced by newer entries.

So, what do i try next?

As you can see from the file listing above, i still have the email databases, its just the current transaction log that is missing. There is one log file E0001C7D.log and E00.chk files still there as well, no idea what they are for.

I tried running a tool called "eseutil.exe" like so:
code:
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\BIN>eseutil /m ../mdbdata/priv1.edb

The output of that is as follows:

code:
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\BIN>eseutil /m ../mdbdata/priv1.edb

I know there are other switches that can repair / recover .edb files and such, but im not familar with this eseutil.exe tool and dont know exactly what the consequencies of using it in these other modes are.

I have also tried restarting the exchange services, and also rebooting the server.

The result of being unable to start the Mailbox store is that no one has any email, and hundreds of these messages are being logged:
code:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeSA
Event Category: MAPI Session
Event ID: 9175

The MAPI call 'OpenMsgStore' failed with the following error:
The Microsoft Exchange Server computer is not available. Either there are network problems or the Microsoft Exchange Server computer is down for maintenance.
The MAPI provider failed.

So, ive spent the last 4 hours on google, and support.microsoft.com and am not any closer to fixing the problem.

I guess im looking for a way to regentate this e00.log file.. ?

Any help would be most appriciated!

Cheers,

Jason

What's up Jason,

I had this same thing happen a few weeks ago. Are you running Norton Corp? If so, check the quarantine logs, there's a good chance you'll find the log file. If it's there, you should be able to restore the file and then mount the stores. Stupid norton is scanning log files and sees them as a threat?? You need to configure Norton to not scan log files! Hope this helps

Billy

I had the same issue happen last week. The only thing I could find out is that the SAV Corp edition scanned the log files and corrupted them. This caused the private & public stores to dismount. I had to remove all log files, run the eseutil /p priv1.edb command and the same on the public folders. I then restarted the IS and then the databases mounted. I determined that SAV is the culprit as this happened about 45 minutes after the nightly scan began as well as 2 nights in a row. I disabled SAV and the issue did not happen again. Fell free to contact me with any questions.

Thanks,

Mike

Hey thanks for posting the fix. Solved my problem. Norton had snagged one of the log files.

Anyway, glad it happened cause I had over 13gigs of log files... haha

So now I have lots of drive space [Smile]
