cammy -> eseutil error 1811 (20.Jun.2004 12:18:00 PM)

I am trying to do an offline defrag of the mailbox store but it doesn't start and I get an error of:

"Error: Access to source database C:\... failed with Jet error -1811"

I have dismounted the mailbox store in the ESM prior to attempting the defrag and followed the instructions in the microsoft article 192185 for exchange 2000.

Any advice about what could be stopping this would be welcome.

Hi Cammy,

Could you please post the exact ESEUTIL /D command you're executing?

This error indicates the priv1.edb file cannot be found.

cammy -> RE: eseutil error 1811 (20.Jun.2004 7:33:00 PM)

In the command prompt from the c:\program files\exchsrvr\bin directory I ran:

"eseutil /d c:\exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb"

I thought that I should have entered this as: "eseutil /d c:\program files\exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb" as the exchsrvr folder is not in the root of the c: drive but is in the program files directory, but I couldn't get this to work.

Could this be because dos doesn't like spaces in folder names? Like "c:\program files\"?

Oh me. People with only windows experience.

You are correct that it will not like the space. So what do you do to correct that? Enclose the full path in double quotes.
eseutil /d "c:\program files\exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb"

The above is all on one line.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. Got it working ok now.

I must get a book or something about how to use dos properly.....

Ms Exchange Server databases which can not be fixed via eseutil /r or eseutil /p utilities. In such situation, use a 3rd party tool which is a good option because it has been observed that in most of the corruption cases, ESEUTIL fails to repair the corrupt or damaged EDB file. It only works on those EDB files having minor corruption but for severe corruption, it is totally useless, even many Exchange MVPs say that.

So use 3rd party software at :
