Hi all

I have an Exchange 2000 information store which is currently 92GB. I need to do a eseutil to drop the database size (it has never been compressed / defraged in 3 years!)

My question is, does anyone have any stats on roughly how long this would take? I obviously have to dismount the store in order to do it, but my users will scream to hell and back if it's down for a long time :-(

I did an eseutil /d on my 45 gig IS and it took about 2.5-3hours in which it seems to hang for a looooooong time at 50% which scared me, but it finally went through.

Just FYI it took my 45 gig IS and reduced it to around 36 gigs. Also it took my 2.x gig PFS and brought it down to 500megs. This was after a serious crash on our end.

Of course this is hardware dependent but a rough estimate per this article turned out to be close in my situation:

http://petri.co.il/defragment_exchange_2000_2003_server_databases.htm

"Microsoft recommends a conservative 5 - 7 GB per hour for a defrag operation, which means that your server will be offline for as long as it takes, assuming no hardware failures will occur."

galbicka makes a good point about hardware. Keep in mind I copied my dbs to a brand new server and it still too 3 hours. The server was a dual xeon 2.8 with 3 gb of memory and hardware raid!
