I'm having problems backing up my company's Exchange server.

I would like to use the Windows Backup that shipped with WIN 2000. However, Windows Backup skips all the .edb and .stm & E*.log files.

Any idea how I can get this to work? Thanks.

Hello Mr. Ebony,

Remember you shouldn't backup the .edb and .stm & E*.log files on file level, but through the Exchange option in NT Backup, see following article for details:

Thanks Henrik:

That helps. I've still a newbie when it comes Exchange.

So you're saying that in order to be prepared for Disaster Recovery, all I neede to B/U are:

1. Storage Groups?
2. System State?
3. Metabase via the Microsoft Internet Information Service (IIS) snap-in interface?

When I open the Windows B/U App I see the following:
A: Floppy
C: OS
D: Data
E: CDROM
M: Exifs
System State
Exchange
Microsoft Exchange Server

Please see below for explanation...

C: OS
there are also .edb and .stm files located in this drive as well...You're saying that i do not need to b/u these files, correct)?

D: Data
I don't believe there are any files in this drive that need to be backed up..

E: Logs
All of the exchange transaction logs are located in this drive. Along with more .edb and .stm files. You're saying i don't need to back these up, correct?)

M: exIFS
Never B/U this drive correct?

System State
Should I select the Winnt\Sysvol folder when along with System State when backing up?

Exchange
This option is grayed out...and when I try to expand this directory, it prompts me with which server do you want to query. Do i need to select anything from here?

Microsoft Exchange Server
This is where I need to select the Storage Groups?

I'm just extremely worried that I'm not backing up the right files. And if I need to do a disaster recovery, then I'm not going to be ready.

I've read a lot of MS articles on this, but I'm still not positive that I'm backing up the right info......if you don't mine, can you walk me through the backup step-by-step. Thanks Henrik.

Stephen

P.S. I've been losing a lot of sleep over this....any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello again Ebony,

In order to be able to restore Exchange 2000 completely, you need to backup the following:

System State (which includes AD wherein E2K users reside)

Exchange information Store (so you can restore the Exchange Server configuration)

As you are indicating yourself you as well need to backup the Metabase as Exchange 2000 relies heavily on IIS.

You don't need to backup the EXCHSRVR folder(s) including subfolders, log files, .edb and .stm etc. - actually if you're unlucky you could corrupt the store or log files if doing so...

The E2K files can be restores from the E2K CD.

Never backup the M: drive !

Ignore Exchange, concentrate on checkmarking the respective store(s).

Regards
