Stephen Walker -> Starting to migrate to Exchange 2000 from 5.5 (13.Jan.2004 6:38:00 PM)

Hi, we have an old windows 2000 server running 5.5 sp4. We have about 100 users. I want to install Exchange 2000 on a new server and
eventually move all mail etc from the old to the new server. I was told to run "setup /forestprep /domainprep" on one of our domain controllers. I did this last week but it is not obvious if it has worked.
1) How do I check to see if it has worked?
2) On reading various articles the subject of an Active Directory Connector (ADC) has now emerged. Should I have installed this first? If so how can I get round this now.

You can use ADSIEDI.MSC to see if the new attributes have been added to user accounts.

Don't be scared - you're almost there. The forst/domain preps are important. you DO want to tell the setup that you are joining an existing 5.5 site. The best way to migrate is by installing 2k exchagne fresh on new hardware and joining it to the 5.5 site. Then run the ADC and sync 5.5 to the AD, THEN run the domain/forest preps, then run setup. See this article for further details: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/2003/library/depguide.mspx
Its for 2003 but they're exactly alike in deployment from 5.5.
