karldavidson -> ExMerge 5.5 to 2000 (4.Mar.2005 1:41:00 AM)

Hello,

We are moving about 100 users from our exchange 5.5 server on a NT 4.0 domain, to an exchange 2000 server which is in a different site of the same organization on a windows 2000 AD domain.

From what we can tell using ExMerge is the way to do this (better ideas?)

What we were planning was to export the data using ExMerge, delete the mailboxes, force replication, then active the AD accounts on the new domain, create mailboxes, and import the ExMerge data.

Our organization is very large, and replication takes a long time. My question is... What happens to the users mail comming in between the time when we delete their mailbox on server.origninal to moving it to server.new? I would think that it would bounce. Is there a way that we can prevent this? Any better ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

We are thinking now that there is no real way to prevent this, and we will just have to go ahead and have our users mail bounce.

Anyone know of a site that is good for solving exchange problems?

I'm in the same boat trying to figure out the best way to migrate mailboxes to a new server. I think I'll use the EXMerge also...

To answer your question though, you could temporarily setup a SMTP relay and point it to a black hole until the new server was online. When things are running you then point it to the new server and the spooled mail should be forwarded to the new server.

our exchange servers at corporate are starting the process of migrating to exchange 2003. We are thinking that we may wait until that migration is complete, that way we could utilize exchange 2003's migration tools. I have heard rumors that they are actually kind of buggy though.

Hi,

In exchange 2003 SP1 you can actually move mailboxes cross site. This works very well - I have just consolidated a 100 site exchange 5.5 organization 20.000 mailboxes to a very small number of sites using this feature.
