We are currently in a 5.5 organization with plans to go to 2003. Those plans are currently in testing but here is my problem.

We are need of a backup SMTP server and my boss has reccomended we go to Exchange 2003 for the smtp server.

My concern is that I dont want to mess with the 5.5 org and run forest/domain prep until I am certain everyhting is good. If I build out this new SMTP server 2003 then for the installation it will make me run forest/domain prep..correct?

Does it not make sense to do a 5.5 SMTP then wait till after the migration to upgrade to 2003.

I just cant seem to find a reason what reward we gain for a 2003 smtp versus the risk?

Any help would be great- Thanks Guys
