We currently have in place a Windows 2000 Server running Exchange Enterprise 2000...We are in the process of migrating our Domain Controller from Windows 2000 to Server 2003 and then upgrading our existing Exchange server to Exchange Enterprise 2003...Are there any ideas or hints that would be helpful before starting this migration...Any help would be greatly appreciated...Thanks

First of all: Upgrade Exchange first! Exchange 2000 won't understand win2k3's IIS and will stop working! The upgrade of Exchange 2000 to 2003 normally goes without problems. You also might want check the free books at:

Yes, my Domain Controller is a seperate server altogether.

I have another issue right now that is preventing the upgrade. We recently upgraded from Advanced to Enterprise Exchange b/c of the 16gb limitation but today had errors in Application log about the information store reaching its 16gb limitation and after checking both priv.edb and pub.edb they are only at 12gb added together - Any clues??

You get warnings about the 16 GB limit, even though you have upgraded Exchange to the Enterprise version ?

Did you upgrade by running "Setup.exe" and then chose "Reinstall" ?

Try to open the Exchange System Manager and navigate to Administrative Groups -> First Administrative Group, then leftclick on servers. You will then be able to see your Exchange servers type, edition, version etc.

Does it say "Enterprise" under Edition ?

It does not say Enterprise it does say Version 6.0 Build No.6294.4 SP3...The store will mount but then stops after about 5 minutes

I have W2k SP4 Server

Exchange Enterprise 2000 (at least I think) - I did check the registry and there are no entries that match w/ the older version

Exchange 2000 exists in 2 versions - Standard and Enterprise, if it's the Enterprise version it should say so under Type, in the already mentioned container in the Exchange System Manager.

Are you sure it's not a evaluation version or something you have installed ?

It is Enterprise - even allows us to add additional storage group which you can not do in Standard - also I have looked in the Registry and verified we have the Full Packaged Version (Enterprise) We can only guess the store.exe file did not update during our upgrade from Standard to Enterprise - No matter we are going to build a new Exchange server - Any helpful hints?...Should I decommision the Exchange server to a member server before the migration?
