The organization that I work for is getting ready to migrate to Exchange 2003 on Windows 2000. What are the pro and cons to installing Exchange 2003 on a Domain Controller versus a Member Server?

Any advice or links to comparisons on the web would be much appreciated.

Exchange consumes a lot of memory, and is very intensive when it comes to disk operations. If possible I would recommend putting
Exchange on a member server. It will run on a DC or even a GC, but depending on number of mailbox-enabled user, you are likely to run into performance issues.

I agree. Also, putting Exchange on a member server makes it easier to recover in case of Disaster.
Store.exe and lsass.exe can easily use up 512M of memory each esp with many users.

If using SBS, with 100 or less users then putting it on the same server would cost less and be less demanding. Otherwise in most other cases I suggest a Member server.

Thanks for the input, we are currently using exchange 2000 on a DC but we have another DC at that same location. Since we are doing a full hardware swap we had the option of deciding if we wanted to contiue and set up exchange 2003 as a DC also. Looks like we will be going the member server route.
