Hi all,

I am planning to install exchnsvr w2k3 on w2k3.I have an existing w2k server as a domain controller. Is it possible to install exchange server on w2k3 without installing AD? Instead, Exchange will use the AD details from w2k.

Yes you can but only if Win2003 Server becomes a member server to the Win2000 Server.

You can leave the Active Directory on Win2000.

WHAT...

You can use the existing windows 2000 AD yes.

You have to run tthe following for the exchange 2003 to run in a windows 2000 ad.

adprep/forestprep
adprep/domainprep

setup/forestprep
setup/domainprep

You need to extend the windows 2000 ad schema to accept exchange 2003 attribute sets.

if you have an FE- Bridge head and a BE setup

Sequence is a follows.

FE first and then BH and Then BE.

HTH

Note: E2k3 can run on a win2k SP#4 OS.

Adprep /ForestPrep and Adprep/DomainPrep should only be run if you're introducing a Windows 2003 Domain Controller (or in-place upgrading a Windows 2000 DC to 2003) to your current Windows 2000 AD domain, not when installing Exchange 2003 into a Windows 2000 AD domain.

It's correct that Exchange 2003 DomainPrep and ForestPrep should be run in order to extend the AD with Exchange 2003 schemas and definitions, but this is (if you have the required permissions) automatically done during the Exchange 2003 installation.

As a final note Exchange 2003 can actually be installed on a Windows 2000 server with SP3 as a bare minimum.

Hi

Beg to differ.

setup only runs forestprep and not domain prep.

The ACL's and permission to access logs on the local security policy needs to be administratively done by running setup/domainprep.

Kind request to let me know if my understanding is incorrect [Smile]

If you are running Exchange 2000/2003 setup for the first time in your forest, setup will run forestprep and domainprep if you have the appropriate permissions. If it is the first installation in your organization and you do not have the appropriate rights, setup will fail.

You then either have to use an account that's a member of Enterprise Admins and Schema Admins to start the install over or run forestprep/domainprep from an account with the appropriate rights.

If you install Exchange into other domains in your forest, you need to run domainprep manually in each domain you are installing in. Domainprep is not automatically run when installing into subdomains; setup may complete properly, but Exchange won't work properly.

You can rerun forestprep as well; it doesn't hurt anything, but it's not necessary.

Hi all,

Thanks for the reply. It seems that only running adprep would extend the schema of my w2k AD.Correct me if I'm wrong, I should run adprep / forestprep and adprep / domainprep on my Windows 2003 std server or w2k server?

As my w2k is a production server, will it slow down the network in the mist of upgrading?

Do I need to restart my server to take effect the changes?

Thanks again

Hi eric,

You should only run adprep / forestprep and adprep / domainprep if you present a Windows 2003 Domain Controller to your existing Windows 2000 domain, not if you only install aWindows 2003 member server.
