We have approximately 150 users, and are changing our domain name since someone screwed up the name of the 2000 domain we are currently working in. (example is moronad.moron.com to simply moron.com) Our Exchange 5.5 installation resides in moronad.moron.com and I want to migrate mailboxes to the new 2K3 server.

The first question I have is, what order should I do things? Change the domain name, disjoin and rejoin all servers and workstations, then do the coexistence? Or should I perform the coexistence, and then change the domain name?

Second question is fairly straightforward. Our current 5.5 server is named MAIL. I'd like our new server to retain the name if possible. Is it OK to use such a utility as "newsid" to change the name after decommissioning the 5.5 server?

Its not easy in a 2000 domain, you would probably have to scrap your current domain and start again and recreate the accounts and then install Exchange again (from scratch) into your new domain and restore databases...

In Windows 2003 its a lot easier...

Understood. We're considering keeping the domain intact to reduce any impact there. Still have question about renaming the new mail server to "mail" after decommissioning the 5.5 server and using a tool like "newsid". newsid.exe generates a new sid, new computer name, and registers with AD, along with making the necessary changes to the registry. I hate to take such a risky step, however, but a lot of people use the name for their POP3 and OWA access.
