I appreciate the responses I received. I ended up working with Microsoft support on this. It ended up being an configuration issue.

After performing some checks on the SMTP Virtual Server of COMP-MUSK-SRV1, we noticed that only 192.168.1.1 and cewsi.com are allowed on the connection restrictions. This is the root cause of the problem. From the ænetstat ûaÆ output, we can see that the SMTP connection was established between COMP-MUSK-SRV1 and the Microsoft mail server (public). So, to allow the COMP-MUSK-SRV1 server to accept emails from the Internet domains, the connection restrictions should be open to all the addresses.

Excellent. Glad you're working now!

Sometimes, when you think you've tried it all, it ends up being the things you've taken for granted. Good example here of a call to MS support that was worth the extra expense.

Thanks for the follow up.

Yes - I looked at this for so long, I think I lost perspective on the basics. Though I have worked in tech support for many years, I sometimes approach problem solving by making things more complicated than they really are - my bad.

On the bright side - I feel I really got a bargain with Microsoft by using the $99 email support option. The guy ended up Webexing or whatever they use, to the server and finding the problem. Good deal!

Interesting but here's my problem:

when i use that site to check if my e-mail is valid, it finds my mx record successfully but then it says my e-mail address appears to be invalid with error "smtp server failure: no hostname found"

Any ideas on what i need to do to figure this out? I can send out e-mail but can't receive them as well.

The tool is testing two things.

1.) Do you have an MX record in DNS?

Sounds like you received a "PASS" response.

2.) Can "I" connect to the MX record(s)'s SMTP Port?

Is this the failure you're seeing?

Actually you're right I can't telnet to it from the outside but I can telnet to it on the same system.

I was told that I have to map my hostname to my IP address (which is dynamic by the way). And becuase it's dynamic, i'm using a third party vendor called www.dyndns.org so that I have full control of the (external) DNS instead of me contacting my ISP (SBC) because they want me to purchase static which I do not want to do. (costly)

Is this true? Or is it just a simple mis-configure on the exchange box itself?

System Specs:
1. Server 2003
2. Exchange 2003 w/sp1
3. All the critical updates/patches
4. tall-guy.net (FQDN)

Also how can I check to see if I setup an MX record on my DNS?

To answer your question, I don't think I did [Frown]

nslookup
set type=mx
yourdomain.com

You should see MX records with preferences.

Ahhh yes I did do that already. My MX record is pointed to verisign-ess.tall-guy.net

That's also my hostname by the way. Anything else? After changing my MX record, is there anything else I need to do?

Well, I suppose even though your dynamic ip is being kept updated in dns by dyndns.org, I would assume that after your server gets a new IP, global DNS would not receive the change for a time. If that is the case, you would get bounces during that time-frame.

Additionally, if you look here again:

http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=tall-guy.net+

You will see that your server verisign-ess.tall-guy.net could not be contacted. I find that it's not in DNS. I think that's a slight problem [Smile] .

Ok I see that it cannot talk to my mail server. I was wondering, do I need to create a subdomain and then point it to my IP address? If so then how do I accomplish this?

Secondly if I do end up creating subdomain, how will my hostname verisign-ess.tall-guy.net know that I created a subdomain? Do I have to point to it or will it see it automatically?

From what I can tell, you just need to add your system "verisign-ess.tall-guy.net" in both forward and rerverse DNS.

I assume port 25 is open from the internet as well?

while you're at it, let me see if you can help me with my problem...

I've got Exchange 2003 running on SBS 2003. It's been working fine for a while, but then last week it suddenly stopped receiving emails from the internet. The server can send and use the POP3 Connector, and local email still works both ways. MX records are correct, port 25 is open, and I can telnet to the SMTP server.

Last Friday, we had a problem with thousands of copies of the same email in the queue, which led me to discover that the server was open for relay. I cut that off, but I'm not sure I did it correctly.
I think the wrong setting might have inadvertently been changed in the SMTP Virtual Server Properties, but I don't know quite enough to find the exact problem--I'm just a college student trying to remotely administer my dad's box.

Any ideas?

actually, nevermind.

about 2 minutes after I posted here, my dad emailed me and said all his emails suddenly started coming in, so I guess I just did something right. Now to figure out what...
