I do not have a spare Exchange server to restore to. Using the Windows built in backup program, how can I restore to the file system? It is forcing me to restore to an exchange server.

Is there a way to restore to the Ex2003 "Rocovery Storage Group?"

I am apprehensive about this step. I do not want to overwrite my existing data store.

Thanks, but one thing is not clear.

When I restore the database, will it automatically go to the Recovery Storage Group on my production server? I do not want to accidentally over-write my current database with an old version. That would be really bad.

Good question.

I was also in doubt first time I checked the Recovery Storage Group feature.

In NT Backup you need to choose "Alternate Location" under Restore Files to: and type in the path you have specified when you added mailbox store to Recovery Storage Group.

Then you won't overwrite any production stores.

All is solved now. I do not need to back up to a file using the Storage Recovery Group (SRG). One thing to note that is not clear in this thread, that is the SRG is present, the default behavior is for MS Backup to restore to that group. Thus, the primary production database remains untouched.

Be sure to follow these directions:

To create a Recovery Storage Group:
1. Start Exchange System Manager.
2. Expand Administrative Groups (if appropriate), expand AdministrativeGroupName (if appropriate), and then expand Servers.
3. Right-click ServerName, point to New, and then click Recovery Storage Group.
4. In the Name box, type a name for the Recovery Storage Group.

Try to use the same name that you used for the original storage group when you specify a name for the Recovery Storage Group. If you receive an error message that is similar to the following when you do so, use a different name for the Recovery Storage Group:

The object StorageGroupName already exists. Enter a unique directory name for this object.
5. In the Transaction log location and in the System path location boxes, specify a location for the transaction log files and for the system path. Make sure that the location that you specify for the transaction log files for the Recovery Storage Group is different from the location that is specified for the transaction log for the original storage group.
6. Click OK.
7. Right-click the Recovery Storage Group that you created, and then click Add Database to Server
8. In the Select database to recover dialog box, click the mailbox store that you want to add to the Recovery Storage Group, and then click OK.
9. In the Mailbox Store Properties dialog box, review the properties of the mailbox store, and then click OK.

I just tested this an extra time and you are right... [Roll Eyes]

I think it would have been nice to actually get this information when the Restore is prepared, even the log report afterwards doesn't mention the files have been restored to C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Recovery Storage Group
