I have reset the fqdn, I had changed it when I was trying to sort the problem and forgot to set it back.

Unfortunately I have no control over the reverse dns as that is controlled by my ISP :-(

I will try and delete the mail2 entry.

Based on a rudimentary knowledge of your setup.. I would set the FQDN to mail.riccisoft.co.uk

Anyone else wanna chime in on this thread ? ?

I have set the fqdn to mail.riccisoft.co.uk

I can't remove the mail2 entry, it is another thing out of my control :-(

Even with the changes I have made, how do you explain me being able to manually send the smtp commands and it works when mail from exchange on the same box does not work ? Surely if the dns settings were wrong it would fail both ways ?

Thanks you your time in trying to help me with this.

To be perfectly honest Ricci... I dont know... just seemed like some of the other settings were out of whack...

Why are you unable to remove mail2 ... who does your DNS?

Freeparking, the form that lets you maintain and add entries has some hardcoded items that you can't remove :-(

It now seems that all mail sent from my exchange server is getting stuck in the queue.

Not all has the same message, some mails (autoreply messages to postmaster@<domain>.com) get the unable to relay - due to fake source addresses in spam messages.

This is getting weirder every day [Confused]

Even more testing: Mail is not delivered to any of the *big* domains (ntl,bt,yahoo,hotmail,.. etc.)

but mail to smaller companies works fine.

What would exchange be doing that is different to the commands that I manually send ? Is there a way to log the smtp commands that exchange is sending ?

Welcome back, hope you had a nice time :-)

Already tried that :

NOT FOUND in any 3rd party RBL's

I am not sure, but I get the feeling that mail is only getting delivered to other Exchange servers (I may be imagining this)

Are you using an IMC (internet mail connector ?)

I hope I have the terminology correct as I have never used one... never had the need.

Don't know if this info will help in figuring out what is wrong but here goes my idea on this problem, after a week of testing and tring to figure out what is wrong I've noticed that if I do a direct connection (on exchange server) to the server thats getting this error it works. (via telnet blabla 25 ) it works 100%

with ehlo or helo

BUT with the exchange server it just does not go.

this only happens to 2 or 3 domains.

So my guess is that this is a bug!

any ideas?
