I have E2k3 running non-clustered behind ISA 2004. Every 48 hours the computer needs to be rebooted, and here are the symptoms:
Internally everything is fine mailflow/owa/outlook
Externally everything is slowwwwww mailflow takes about 10 minutes or sometimes not at all OWA, makes it through ISA fine, hits the HTTPS redirect, then times out Perfmon thinks processor/memory/disk are all fine Again, interanally everything is okay, only problems are external Only software loaded is CA/e-trust (which is disabled and services are disabled) Ping and NSLookup provide normal responses Exchange Server console is completely responsive when this is going on.
ExBPA reports NO issues! As of today...
Go figure!

Just trying to work through it with ya:
1. Has it been working fine?
2. Can you remove ISA from the equation somehow and still have the issues?
3. Email in both directions (external to internal and vice versa) are both slow?
4. Do you have anything showing up in the SMTP queues? When you send an email from external to internal how long does it take to actually get into the network? Is the slowness external to your network? External to ISA? Or external to the exchange server?

One of three things come to mind with the ISA server. By chance, did you recently install Win 2003 SP1 to the ISA box? If so, did this problem start after the install?
Are you using the ISA SMTP message screener, if so, are you filtering by key words and/or extensions? Have you monitored port 25 on the ISA box, ensuring that SMTP traffic is flowing in and out of the firewall? If you are using the SMTP message screener, have you checked the ISA logs for dropped and/or passed SMTP traffic?
Have you tried publishing the Exchange server without any SMTP relays? Not a good practice but worth troubleshooting. Post back with your results.
