The problem is resolved. Thank all of you for helping me to visualize a wider range of potential problems than I was seeing on my own.
The scenario is this. I asked the ISP to make 1 authorized changed to the DNS because our contractor had our new web site ready to go on line. We had ben previously hosting our own web site. So when I logged onto the server to change our internal DNS to point to the new web site, I was in a hurry and accidently said yes to install SP1 from the automatic update. When I rebooted, we were not getting any outside mail. Hence the focus on SP1. What really happened was at the same time the ISP changed the address for www, they also changed the address of the mail server by 1. Going from .118 to .117. .117 is the address of our wireless antenna.... We use wireless Internet. So our DNS was resolving the address of the mail server to the wireless radio instead of the mail server, which of course is why we weren't getting any mail from the outside world. Because I had McAfee installed on my workstation with the port 25 outbound restriction on, I was unable to connect to the server's port 25 with telnet. When I took that off and was able to connect, I figured out it had to be something besides the server. From a workstation outside the network, I was able to figure out the unauthorized DNS change. This was a huge learning experience for me, but with out your help I would have ended up reinstalling everything and not fixing the right problem. I sincerely appreciate all of your suggestions that finally led me to figure out I was fixing the wrong problem!
