Question: Why on earth does installing the SSL certificate on IE have anything to do with the RPC/HTTP in Outlook? Does Outlook check with IE and ask whether or not its "trustworthy"? And why do you NOT have to do this with OWA?

When you use VPN it's like being connected directly to the LAN, so yes you can use the Outlook MAPI client over a VPN connection.

RedX
RPC over HTTP(S) expects to find a valid certificate in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities in IE, and what other application would be a better place to store the certificates?
