jojoindia2000 -> Relay works with OWA, not with Outlook Express (18.Aug.2003 7:06:00 PM)

In my network, I have configured my SMTP Server to relay only my domain.
Now, when I do this, OWA works fine......but
Outlook Express doesn't send my messages to other accounts like hotmail, yahoo etc....It gives the error ...Unable to relay.

But, OWA works just fine.
What do I do?
Pls help

in Ootlook Express did you select the "My server requires Authentication" for Outbound mail?

Hi Jonzie,

OWA is able to relay because inbound messages aren't mediated by the SMTP service, so there is no SMTP relay involved.

You will need to enable SMTP relay for the SMTP service. However, I would require some format of authentication, whether that be user auth, certificate auth, or IP address auth, depending on your requirements, before you allow relay.

HTH,
Tom

Anyone that successfully authenticates can relay mail so configure outlook express advanced settings to say my mail server requires authenication and add the credentials in. There is a setting to say use the same credentials as the recieving servr I believe.

Hi Chris,

Good point! I almost always use internal SMTP relays, but you can create a second virtual SMTP server as a relay and configure that to accept the anonymous SMTP connections for email to be delivered to domains under your own administrative control.

Thanks!
Tom
