drpcken -> Installing on new server and moving (7.Sep.2005 6:55:01 PM)

I have a question.  I'm installing Exchange 2003 server on a new server (my current one is up and running) and I plan on migrating all mailboxes to this new server after the installation process.  But do I have to run the domainprep again?  My DC is on a seperate server and is already setup with my current mail server.

Any other tutorials for adding another exchange server, then moving all mailboxes would be great also.

Thanks!

You only need to run DomainPrep if installing the first Exchange 2003 server into an AD forest or if installing an additional Exchange 2003 server in a child domain.

Since it sounds like you're adding a new server to your existing Exchange organization you shouldn't worry about running DomainPrep.

A good tutorial on how to move mailboxes, public folders etc. to a new server, see:

Awesome thanks!

I figured I wouldn't need to run all of that, but thank you for clarifying.

I installed the new server last night, got it up to date with my current exchange server (service packs, updates, etc.) and they both show up in my system manager.

I will follow the directions in that link.  Thanks again!!!

I have another quick question...

I moved one mailbox to test it and it worked great (with the exception of OWA but thats my firewall forwarding to my old mail server) and I checked my mailbox in System Manager of the new server and the mailbox I moved is there, but when I look at Logins, I have 3 entries for the mailbox I moved.  Is this normal?

Thanks!

Henrik Walther -> RE: Installing on new server and moving (8.Sep.2005 2:51:52 PM)

Yes more than one login session in the System Manager is expected behaviour.

drpcken -> RE: Installing on new server and moving (8.Sep.2005 4:05:22 PM)

Awesome!

I'm scared to replicate to the new server though so it will copy all public folders, because someone who's worked here longer told me they 'think' they did that once and it caused duplicate contacts to appear in the public folder contacts.

I'm not sure if they know what they are talking about, but is that a possibility?

Thanks again!

Henrik Walther -> RE: Installing on new server and moving (9.Sep.2005 2:01:20 AM)

In those migrations I've done I haven't ended up with duplicate contacts in Public Folders. I've both migrated simly by using the System Manager Replication configuration and PFMigrate.

drpcken -> RE: Installing on new server and moving (9.Sep.2005 12:46:33 PM)

So I use both PFMigrate and System Manager?  Sorry for the questions but I wanna do this right the first time.

Thanks again!

Nope, Henrik was merely saying that both methods work fine. If you require more information on the Public Folder Migration tool (pfmigrate) please visit: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822895

Henrik and underwarez:

Thanks for all your guidance!  Mailbox moving went very well but i have one more question:

I have some mailboxes I'm not sure about.  I have one called SMTP (servername-{longvalue}), another called System Attendant, and System Mailbox({longvalue}).  They already exist on my server that I'm moving the mailboxes to, so I need to know if I should move the ones from my old server to the new one even though they already exist.

Thanks again guys for all the help!

underwarezs -> RE: Installing on new server and moving (9.Sep.2005 8:06:36 PM)

These mailboxes are used by Exchange to store various items of data, so it is not recommended to change them, or remove/modify/replace anything inside them. Basically, don’t import these mailboxes from your old server, to your new one.

And if you want the insights about these mailboxes I can highly recommend you checkout below posts over a Evan Dodd's blog:

drpcken -> RE: Installing on new server and moving (10.Sep.2005 8:13:35 PM)

Well I have my old server and new server running side by side and its going great.  I evened turned off the services on the old server temporarily to see what happened and it still worked.  I plan on leaving them running together for a few days while my organization runs on them.

But I noticed this:
On my OLD server, the priv1 file is about 8 gigs and the pub1 file is around 2.5 gigs.  But on my NEW server they are significantly smaller.  The priv1 is 6.9 gigs and the pub1 file is 300 megs.  Is this normal?  I setup replication to the new server and set it to 'Always Run' on all the public folders and propigated all the settings as instructed in the tutorials.

I just want to make sure when decommission the first server that everything will work itself out.

Thanks again gentlemen!

Henrik Walther -> RE: Installing on new server and moving (11.Sep.2005 2:28:52 AM)

If you're certain all mailboxes, public folders have been moved to the new server then everything should be ok. It may very well be because there's a lot of log files that haven't been pruged after moving the mailboxes etc.

In order to have them purged make a full backup with an Exchange aware backup application like NTBackup.

drpcken -> RE: Installing on new server and moving (11.Sep.2005 10:05:56 PM)

When you say 'move' public folders, you do mean set it to replicate on the new server and wait for replication to occur correct?  I've already moved all my mailboxes successfully.

Thanks again Henrik.  I've read all your articles on here, they are great!

Oh and one more thing, I'm noticing ALOT of log files in my MTDATA folder that are house my priv and pub folder.  Is this normal too?

Henrik Walther -> RE: Installing on new server and moving (12.Sep.2005 2:51:10 AM)

Yes you should replicate all the Public Folders to the new server by using the System Manager or PFMigrate.

And I bet the reason why you see all those logfiles in the MDBDATA folder is because all the mailboxes have been moved. To purge (flush) them take a full online backupof the stores.

And hey thanks for the feedback [8D]

drpcken -> RE: Installing on new server and moving (12.Sep.2005 6:49:58 PM)

In all the tutorials I've read about migrating, it doesn't mention anything about setting replication for the Event Forms, NNTP Control Folder, the OWAScratchpads, or the Store Events.  I imagine this all configures itself once I remove the old server correct?

Also, I'm noticing in the replication status of the public folders, my old server status says InSync and the New server says Local Modified.  Thats kind of confusing me.

Will this be a problem when I remove my first exchange server?

Thanks!

[edit]
I used system manager to set replication on my new server, but should I use PFMIGRATE to remove the public stores from the old server or will all that work itself out when I uninstall exchange?

You guys have been amazingly helpful and I cannot thank you enough!   [:)]

drpcken -> RE: Installing on new server and moving (15.Sep.2005 1:20:55 PM)

Sorry to bump my post, but I'm almost ready to decommission my OLD exchange server.  I can now shut it down without effecting the NEW mail server and the system runs great.  But I need to know if I need to run PFMIGRATE to remove the public folder store from my old machine (i just used system manager to set replication to the new server and the public stores are there now) or can I just uninstall exchange and everything else will work itself out?

Please read my above reply for more info about it

Thank you guys so much!

Henrik Walther -> RE: Installing on new server and moving (15.Sep.2005 3:04:45 PM)

No you don't necessarily need to delete them on the 5.5 server, just make sure all of them are migrated before delete the Exchange 5.5 server itself.

drpcken -> RE: Installing on new server and moving (15.Sep.2005 4:19:35 PM)

THanks! By the way i'm migrating from a 2003 to a 2003, we just needed it on better hardware.  also
I don't see anything in the tutorials about setting replication for the Event Forms, NNTP Control Folder, the OWAScratchpads, or the Store Events, do I need to do this?

THANK YOU THANK YOU!!
