Hello all,

First I want to say that this is a great article! I have used it on one server already and it worked great.

But I went to do this yesterday on another server and some problems.
I followed all the steps in order.
Prepare your Network for Windows Server 2003
Install Windows Server 2003

But I had problems with this part.
Install Exchange Server 2003
When I goto do the install and it ask what you want to install I can not install messaging and collaboration objects.
It tells me all the active directory objects need to be updated. I went back to the server to make sure the forestprep and domain prep were run and it says they were already ran.

Any ideas what I might have missed or is not functioning on the server. There is only one domain in the environment right now.

Thanks

I took another quick look at the guide and the only thing I see on there that I did not do anything with is where it says "Be sure to replicate the changes throughout the forest". There is only one domain so would I need to do any replicating? Could this be the root of the problem?

Did you run both adprep from the Windows 2003 Server CD and forestprep/domainprep from the Exchange CD?

This is what I did.

  1. Run adprep /forestprep from Windows Server 2003 CD on your Windows 2000 server that holds the Schema master FSMO role. (Of course youíll need to be a member of Schema Admins).  Be sure to replicate the changes throughout the forest before proceeding.
  2. Run adprep /domainprep from Windows Server 2003 CD on your Windows 2000 server. I ran it on the system holding the PDC Emulator FSMO role.
  3. Before bringing a new Windows Server 2003 system online, itís a good idea to review your third-party server utilities and upgrade them to the latest versions to ensure compatibility. In my installation, this included the latest versions of BackupExec, Symantec Antivirus Corp. Edition, and Diskeeper.
  4. Run setup /forestprep from the Exchange Server 2003 CD on the Windows 2000 server that holds the Schema master FSMO role.  Replicate the changes throughout the forest.
  5. Run setup /domainprep from the Exchange Server 2003 CD on a Windows 2000 server. Again, I ran it on the system holding the PDC Emulator role.

Just like the guide states.

is this an in-place upgrade from 2000 to 2003 ? or did you install windows 2003 and exchange 2003 freshly on a new server. If this is an upgrade from 2000 on the same server, then you should upgrade to exchange 2003 before you tough windows. Otherwise , im not sure what the problem is.
