All you need to do is enable the Microsoft Exchange POP3 service in services.msc so clients can access
Exchange via POP3.
For secure access you could apply an SSL certificate to the POP3 instance to encrypt mail.

what's strange is pop3 will work for my test account but it won't work for my own account.

i've checked settings and made sure pop3 is enabled for both accounts.  any thoughts on this?

Open the properties of your account, click on Exchange Features and make sure POP3 protocol is enabled.

What error message do you get when you try to download mail via POP3?
Which client are you using? Outlook Express?

It just keeps prompting me for the password over and over again.  Yes I'm sure the user name is correct, it's the same format as my working account.

I'm using Outlook Express.

Make sure the password is correct and it is not locked out.

Hi,

Just a thought but are you entering your username with the correct syntax? Should be:-

Domain\UserName\
or
Domain\UserName\Mailbox

I had a very confusing moment like yours which turned out that I was being a bit of a muppet and using a forward slash, and not a back slash. Suffice to say I did slap myself around the head.

Have a look on the MS Knowledge base, there are a number of articles on username/password problems with POP3 access.

I had an issue once and it turned out to be the alias.  POP3 uses the alias name in authentication.  Had a user John Smith with username jsmith.  Could not log in via POP no matter what I tried.  Then I finally found that the alias was set to JohnS.  Once I made the alias jsmith....it worked perfect.

For the benefit of pjhutch and jiambor, crimsonfire had the right answer for you and it's not "very strange" as posted. One of the fundamental initial troubleshooting steps in POP3 connection is to check the logons. Like crimsonfires said, "DOMAIN\UserName\Mailbox" although perhaps, for the sake of this thread, crimsonfire should have said "alias" rather than "mailbox". I know what he meant but you two other chaps don't appear to have picked up on his answer.
The domain\user\alias is only required where the user and the alias is different, or where there is any ambiguity in terms of identical entries in the alias etc.

I'll try to get in earlier and pick up more questions. Sorry you had to wait three days for closure.
