Did anyone try Exchange 2003 SP2 and email on Treo 650, is there any improvements?

I have 11 treo 650s and and I'm nervous about trying SP2.
I'm considering a test lab scenario.
Please let me know your findings if you try it out before I do.

We have around 40 Treo 650's but we currently use Goodlink software, I read that Exchange SP2 has some pushing technology, so I am eager to try it and get rid of goodlink which is $500 per client.
Any help appreciated. Also help on how to configure Treo 650 with exchange is also appreciated.

SP2 works great.
Push emails are a huge plus.
my enviroment cosists of:
Exchange 2003 (be/fe)
Isa 2004
Thing sto keep in mind...
It was a real headache to set up when we dropped the isa box in.
Once we got it configured... it worked like magic. but be prepared to troubleshoot headaches with isa. if you know isa very well (which i do not) then it should be eazy as cake.
i recommend sp2

The new push technology (i'm not talking for the old SMS stupid thing) is not yet available.
You will need an update of the Security module (or something like that) from Microsoft which is not yet released

The Messaging and Security Feature Pack will only be available for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices. It is a ROM update on the device and it will be available from the device vendor (as the code has to be customized for every single model). Older Windows Mobile 2003 devices will not support Push (by IP) and the other new features.
Isn't Treo 650 based on Palm OS? In that case, Palm will have to rewrite their implementation of Exchange Active Sync. I really doubt that they will do that. Especially as some of their new devices are based on Windows Mobile 5.0.

So without the MSFP from the manuracturer of the cell phone, how would Active Sync work at the moment with SP2 or without. From what I understand, SP2 only offers the push technology for this aspect so I guess at the moment there wouldn't be any difference.

Without MSFP your options are to sync manually, scheduled or by the old SMS based push. The new SP2 Push needs MSFP to work. Hopefully some vendors will start shiping the update later this month.

I think at this point I will wait and see. I'm not familiar with the old way of manually sync'ing with Active Sync since I'm new to it. I have already put in a question to Audiovox to see what the say for this update. Hopefully in 3-4 months we will see more phones come out with this update. From doing research, no one really posts anything about this MSFP update. I'm sure alot of people are buying phones along with Microsoft's sales pitch of the push technology. Here is the response I just received from Audiovox, does this sound right? Microsoft clearly advertises a Push technology with SP2 but I maybe it is different from RIM's method?

We will have an update early this year but I do not think it will resolve you issue. The reason why is push technology is found in RIM Blackberry. Microsoft´s "push technology" is based exclusively on SMS messages being sent from Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 to Microsoft powered cell phones. Upon reception of such SMS the cell phone is pulling the information from the server. The real push technology, as this one realized in RIM (Research In Motion), doesn´t use SMS messages at all! The device won't be able to support push technology.

There has been alot of talk about the new push technology, but there has also been alot of confusion surounding MSFP. The reason the functionality is not built in to Windows Mobile 5 from the begining was that the code for the new SP2 features where not ready when they shipped the code in may to the device manufacturers. Now all these vendors have to customize it for their devices. In the future, all new devices will be shipped with "SP2 functionality" from the begining.
But other vendors that has licensed the Active Sync protocoll (Symbian, Palm One, Dataviz for example) can also customize their implementations to support the new features in SP2.
Regarding the respons you recived from Audiovox. They describe the old notification technology and not the new that are in SP2.

Mlidholm Yes Treo 650 is Palm OS and uses its own propriatary active sync technology using a workstation or a deligated server.
No it will not be rewritten , so the answer to the original post is sorry no support for Treo 650.
As for dancegruv post, I don't think he read this post correctly when asked about Treo and Push .
Looks like Treo lovers will have to switch to the new Treo 700 .

Mlidholm - If i were to go with this Audiovox PPC6700 and decided to wait until they come out with the MSFP, is there any way I would be able to connect through port 443 (same port for OWA that is currently in use)? I don't really want to open up IMAP and for sure not Pop on my firewall for my phone to connect to. Setting up a custom recipient in exchange to have all my mail forwarded to (copy) seems like it would be a burden on exchange.
Amuller - RoadSync is a client that will install on the 650 and will work for Exchange Active Sync with just being able to get messages with no contacts and calendar sync'ing. I guess I wonder if the 700w will have the same limitation as above.
thanks in advance guys for your help. I'm a little dissapointed in Audiovox's lack of wanting to get this update to their product. Here Microsoft is selling this big feature that replicates RIM, but a lack of hardware support. You would think that Microsoft would have a little more push on the phone manufacturer's to get this done.

Funny....We had been pushing for months to deploy an architecture for RPC over HTTPS to our Director with no avail. It wasn't until just one of our Principals came down with a one Treo 650 and wanted to be able to sync his mail on it that we ended up rolling it out in a months time. I hate politics!!
Anyways. I apologize if I missed it somewhere, but I swear I did not see an answer to whether or not the Treo 650 or other devices that currently work with MSActiveSync on SP1 will still function with SP2. They will still be able to query the web directory and sync thier mailboxes right? I get that there will be some nice functionality coming down the line here that I even look forward too, but at the moment these devices will still work??

Yes the Treo 650 does work perfectly with ActiveSync. As long as the Exchange portion is configured properly :)

de.blackman, I just purchased a Treo650 and I'm having problems with sync'ing. I have a FE/BE scenario where the f/e is running owa with a cert installed. I have no luck when trying to sync from the outside, I get the HTTP 500 Internal server error. I have added the exchange-oma virtual directory per Microsoft's suggestion still with no luck. I have read that if I can get the https://servername/oma authentication to work internally I should be on the way to getting this to work. I currently cannot get that to work as I get a server request error message. SSL in unchecked on all the Virtual Dir for the FE/BE servers. Integrated is checked for the Exchange Vir Dir on the fron end. The OMA and Microsoft-active-sync vir directories just have basic selected. Can anyone give me a few more pointers to check?
I saw in another post you helped a individual with a WM5 Treo and that he had to install the certificate on his device. I question this as being the problem but have no clue on how to install the certificate (or not sure if i need to) on the treo.
Thanks for any help in advance, the sole purpose I bought this thing for is still not working.

Ok, to start off, the Exchange-OMA directory is a solution if you have a single exchange server in your environment. The second solution is to install a frontend server. Please read article 817379 correctly!
On the back-end server check the authentication methods for the following directories in Exchange system manager (ESM) and IIS:
In ESM --> admin group -> server-> protocol -> HTTP -> Exchange virtual server
EXCHANGE -> BASIC AND INTEGRATED!!
Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync -> only Basic
In IIS --> confirm that these are the same settings.
On the front-end server, make sure only Basic is selected for both directories listed about in both locations as well.
Please remove the Exchange-OMA directory and registry key as well.
Temporarily remove the SSL requirement and see if it syncs.
Where did u obtain this certificate from?

I just rebooted the FE server and tried again with no success. I am including the logs from the W3SVC1 dir on both the F/E server and then the back end server
