I want to add a second Storage group.  Seems like best practices would be to put the Log file, System path, Exchange database and Exchange streaming database locations in their own folder separate from the first storage group.

Does that sound correct?  Good idea?

Definitely good practice. Makes things easier to troubleshoot.

Preferably put the logs on separate spindle from the DB and preferably on separate spindles to the first store logs and DB.
