hnad -> exch 2003 sp2 FE installation problem (8.Nov.2005 7:11:05 AM)

Hi

Been trying to install the 2003 SP2 on my front end server but it fails every time. Below is a part of the eventlog with the errors

Been googling the errors but I'm not coming up with much. I've installed all the required hotfixes and gone right through the release notes to check if I've missed something but to no avail.

Anyone else had any experience with this. Obviously can't install sp2 to the backend server until I get this problem sorted with the FE.

Thanks

Dan

I tried installing SP2 last night on our Exchange server, and it didnt work either, and I have received this exact (or very similar) error log.

I've also tried uninstalling IMF v1 as well, stopping Exchange services, and nothing seems to work.

Windows 2003 Enterprise Server, SP1
Exchange 2003 Enterprise, SP1
Dell Poweredge 2650 Dual Processor server

Disappointing really.  I've looked everywhere googling the errors, and no one has it listed out there except this forum.  I'm still looking though.

Hi I also had this exact errorlog, i have a active/passive cluster and i was able to resolv the issue by stopping the cluster service on the passive node and then running the update

I cannot speak for hnad's configuration of course, but a clustered enviornment, is not something that we have in place here.

I've tried again, killing off any services that I felt would have been non-important during install, and I am still having this error generated in the Temp folder.

johnkula -> RE: exch 2003 sp2 FE installation problem (20.Nov.2005 10:06:27 PM)

Do you have antivirus software installed and running on the box?

Amodin -> RE: exch 2003 sp2 FE installation problem (21.Nov.2005 5:20:57 PM)

On my system, no we do not have it installed.

hnad -> RE: exch 2003 sp2 FE installation problem (22.Nov.2005 12:36:12 AM)

Hi

No cluster here either. I've also tried with anti virus disabled with no luck.

I'm not going to waste anymore time with it however. I intend to re-install the server over the holiday break as its not a big deal to re-install the FE.

Amodin -> RE: exch 2003 sp2 FE installation problem (1.Dec.2005 3:42:57 PM)

Re-installing Exchange for the company is really not an option I have, lucky you!  :)

I've been beating my head over this; a real disappointment.  I do not have a complex Exchange setup here, it's the only thing on the server, and a simple Service Pack doesn't install.

Tom Decaluwé -> RE: exch 2003 sp2 FE installation problem (5.Dec.2005 12:19:08 PM)

hi guys,

i'm getting this same error on my FE system but i did make the mistake of upgrading the BE server before doing the FE system.

did any of you do the same?

has anyone come up with a sollution to this problem?

many thanks,

Tom

Amodin -> RE: exch 2003 sp2 FE installation problem (5.Dec.2005 5:11:55 PM)

Our Exchange Server is a bit different....

Ours is actually in a child domain.  All inbound traffic is basically forwarded to us from another location in Canada, and we are in the U.S.  All outbound traffic is sent directly from our U.S. location.  I have not had any luck still with this, and the closest thing I can find about this, is a similar issue wtih Exchange 2000 on an SBS server, where the MSSEARCH.exe version is wrong because Office XP or 2000 was installed and removed.  This isn't our case though, no apps on this box, just Exchange.

aspar -> RE: exch 2003 sp2 FE installation problem (7.Dec.2005 11:39:25 AM)

Hi.

You need to be logged on with a domain user with sufficient access right to the server and the Exchange organisation and you need to be able to authenticate with the domain from the FE Exchange server to be able to install SP2.

Amodin -> RE: exch 2003 sp2 FE installation problem (8.Dec.2005 3:07:42 AM)

I would think that would be pretty self-explanatory, and just to verify, yes I am logging in as the Domain Administrator to do the install.

LiNuXbOx -> RE: exch 2003 sp2 FE installation problem - RESOLUTION (29.Dec.2005 5:02:59 AM)

Dear all,

Well it seems I've had a very similar issue to yourselves only I've managed to fix it.
After receiving the same 'ModuleID not found in map' errors on my FE server and was scratching my head just as yourselves have done to try and figure out what's been going on. Of course Google didn't provide much help to me so I had a fiddle to try and figure out what was going on.
Firstly, I run and netdiag to determine if any network issues existed....and yep... it was true... my FE server had quite a few errors. The main issue came from the LDAP tests where SPN errors were everywhere.
The next step was to resolve these by resetting my FE server computer account in AD Users and Computers. Once the account was reset, I then took the server off the domain and rejoined the domain so that it would re-establish all its account credentials in AD. And bingo!!! Once it had re-registered and rebooted, I ran the Exchange SP2 update file and found that it continued beyond the ModuleID errors.

I hope this works for you guys too... good luck!!
Oh... and funny enough even though it did proceed with the update, it still presents the ModuleID errors in the errorlog.  Go figure.  [:D]

Hey after analysing the setup log you have provideds its seems like the "Registry keys are missing"

Ok follow the steps given below and see if that resolves.

If the following keys are missing,please add the following registry keys under
"HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Search\Install"  :

MajorVersion: REG_DWORD: 0x9
MinorVersion: REG_DWORD: 0x6b
Version: REG_SZ: 9.107.6709
Try to reinstall Exchange SP3

In case of cluster check the following.

Make sure Microsoft Search was properly configured on this cluster server. The resource
is created, and coming online. If not sorting out and getting Microsoft Search
resource to come online should resolve the Setup problem.

Hope that helps u guys,

Regards
Manoj

Won't exchange have a fit after taking it off the domain and putting it back in?

LiNuXbOx -> RE: exch 2003 sp2 FE installation problem - RESOLUTION (3.Jan.2006 12:30:40 AM)

Choppol,

Actually no. We're only talking about removing the FE server from the domain and putting it back using the same hostname and ip config.
The FE server seems to only act like a member server and doesn't have any issues once it reregisters with the domain. As far as the BE server is conserned, nothing has changed. The FE server will still be contactable by the BE using the same host lookup through DNS... it doesn't care about the SID of the FE.
Our servers have now been running for over 5 days now and all seems to be going well.

Happy SP2ing!

Amodin -> RE: exch 2003 sp2 FE installation problem - RESOLUTION (3.Jan.2006 10:35:24 PM)

Manoj,

That is the regedit for Exchange 2000 running on Windows Small Business.

Besides, the regedit keys are there for Search.  I might try to find out a way to re-install Search though, perhaps it is corrupt.  This error log I looked at led me to believe that Search is the problem for whatever reason.

Layfield -> RE: exch 2003 sp2 FE installation problem - RESOLUTION (18.Jan.2006 12:29:42 AM)

Any resolution on this for you Amodin? We have the exact same error. We have tried all the suggestions to no avail.

Thanks in advance!

Which machine holds the PDC emulator role? is it running Windows 2003 as well? If yes, do you get a reply when you type "PING -F -L 1472 PDCEmulatorServer"?

Tom Decaluwé -> RE: exch 2003 sp2 FE installation problem (18.Jan.2006 10:08:03 AM)

Hi Guys,

I had a problem installing SP2 on a Front-End server a while back as you could read in this feed.
I was able to resolve the problem by opening up the firewall a bit more. My FE server was situatited in a DMZ and had a very limited amount of ports open to connect to the backend server. In the back-end network i had an DC holding the Back-end exchange and a second domain controller with only this function. The DMZ firewall rules where set to only allow my server to connect to the Back-end exchange and i believe at the time had no port open to the secondary DC server. After opening the RPC and other ports form the FE to both back-end DC's the SP2 install went like a charm.

So for those of you having problems you might want to check if the FE server can connect to all the BE DC's and maby temporarally open up some extra  ports.

cheerz,

Tom
