I have a new 2003 Server with Exchange 2003 installed, virtual connector configed all ready to go.
MX records changed/Port forward etc all done.

The old Email server is Exchange 5.5. The new 2003 server is to act as the SMTP internet mail
in/out. However at present I need to forward all email received by the 2003 to the existing 5.5
Server. All users on the 2003 server only have .local email addresses. I have setup 'Forward all
mail with unresolved recipients to host' to point to the 5.5 server.

The 5.5 server used to be the main SMTP mail pickup but now I want it to use the new 2003 server
to send/receive internet email. I think the above should be ok for incoming email to our domain which
should be passed onto the 5.5 server but what about outgoing email. What changes do I need to make
to the 5.5 config so that it uses the 2003 server for external internet email.

I had this exact setup at a customer recently. 
The simple option is to add the 2003 server as a smart host in 5.5 in the Intenert SMTP settings.  Then add the 5.5 server to the Relay Tabs of the SMTP Protocol on the 2003 server.  All the 5.5 emails will then go via the 2003 server.

Ok from the 2003 side this would be Protocols,SMTP,Default VS, access and then Relay. Add IP of the 5.5
Server.

From the 5.5 side, need a little expansion of reply. I currently have reroute incomming SMTP mail enabled
and our domain is listed with <inbound> set. I assume I would remove this and add on the 'smart host'.
The IP of the 2003 server is 192.168.0.7. What selection/entry needs to be made on this config tab?.

On the Exchange 5.5 machine, open Exchange Administrator and go toOrganization > Site > Configuration > Connections > Internet MailService > Properties. In the Connections tab go to the ‘Message Delivery’ section and in the dialog box Forward all messages to host enter the IP address of the Policy Patrol machine (10.0.0.10 in Figure 1). Click OOn the Exchange 5.5 machine, open Exchange Administrator and go toOrganization > Site > Configuration > Connections > Internet MailService > Properties. In the Connections tab go to the ‘Message Delivery’ section and in the dialog box Forward all messages to host enter the IP address of the Policy Patrol machine (10.0.0.10 in Figure 1). Leave the re-route as it is this is to accept in-bound mail.  It won't hurt to leave it this way.

Ok, Outgoing email is working fine but incoming is not working. At first I was getting
550 5.7.1 Unable to relay. On the 2003 server ,to try and resolve this I put our domain name, lets say
example.com into Recipient policies, default policies. Now when the email arrives it is held in the SMTP
queue 'message queued for deffered delivery' and goes no further. The issue is obviously with the 2003
server not relaying the incoming email to the 5.5 server. What could I have missed out here?

I have been playing around with a number of things but nothung has worked. One important item of
info os the the 2003 Exchange server is in one domain and the old 5.5 server is in another domain.
The 2003 domain is domain.local and the old 5.5 server is in WHDS. The 5.5 is installed on 2000 Server.

Are the server in the same organisation.  If not then you'll have to set the old 5.5 server to accept relays from the 2003 server.

The NT domain which the NT4/Exchange 5.5 Server is in is called WHDS. The new exchange server is in a new organistion called williams.local.

Email will flow from the 2003 -> 5.5 but not 5.5 -> 2003. All the mailboxes are on the old 5.5 server.

When I send an email from the internet, it gets received by the 2003 ok but then will either bounce (if I dont put our domain name in default recipients policies) or will get stuck in the 'Messages queued for deferred delivery' on the 2003 server.

I also have set on the 'default SMTP server' on the 2003,Acces,relay restrictions, granted to the IP address of the old 5.5 Exchange server. I also have set on the 'messages' tab 'forward all mail with unresolved recipients' set as the domain name of the old 5.5 server. I have on the 2003 machine in HOSTS file the ip for this.

On your 5.5 server in the Internet Mail Service click on routing tab and then "routing restriction" and add your 2003 servers IPaddress in the top box  "Hosts and clients with these IP addresses"

The should allow the 2003 to relay to the 5.5 server.

Tries the suggestion and a lot besides mail going out fine, mail coming in gets stuck in the
'Messages queued for deferred delivery' on the new 2003 server and goes no further.

Can you telnet on port 25 to the 5.5 server and get a response.
This MS link should help http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=153119.  Do this from the 2003 server to prove the 5.5 is accepting SMTP from the 2003.

Is the mail destined for your 5.5 server on a different email domain to the 2003 server.  If it is the 2003 server may be trying to route back to the internet. So you might need to set your internal DNS up to point to the 5.5 server.

Telnet to port 25 ok from the 2003 server to the 5.5. My email domain is williams.co.uk. I have
this set as default in recipient policies on the 2003 server. Also in routing tab in the 5.5
server I have in set as williams.co.uk <inbound>. All the mail boxes are on the 5.5 server.
When I activate the SMTP server on the 2003, switch over the port 25 redirect to the IP
of the 2003 server then mail sent out ok but all incoming will go into the ''Messages queued
for deferred delivery'. It is looking to me as if the 2003 is not 'seeing' the 5.5 server at all and
not passing over the email. In effect all I want the 2003 server to do at the moment is act as
a slave to the 5.5, routing email in/out of internet.

Hi

I think you have a DNS issue.
On the 2003 server at a command prompt type
nslookup -querytype=mx williams.co.uk

This will probably resolve to message labs servers.

This may be the your problem as its going to cause a loop.  If this is the case then you need to add a MX record to your internal DNS the points to the 5.5 server

So add a new forward lookup williams.co.uk if you haven't got one
add  an A record for the 5.5 server
add a MX record that points to the A record added above.
now if you run nslookup -querytype=mx williams.co.uk it should resolve to the 5.5 servers address.

Also if this still fails try using smtpdiag on the 2003 server to trace the problem.

Hi,

Been away for a while, so looking at this problem again. Ok the stage I am at works like this.

New Server 2003. If I create an account on that server and send an email internally to an account hosted on the old 5.5 Server then it will get posted out to the external ISP's mail servers and then sent back and delivered to the correct external account. I suspect that this is because on the Connections tab on the 5.5 server it has forward all messages to the ISP's mail server, not use DNS.

If I send an email from an account hosted on the 5.5 server to an account hosted on the 2003 server it will bounce back with - Unrouteable address. In the routing tab I have put a .local address to be routed to the internal IP of the 2003 server.
 
The least problemataic setup is 2003 with external SMTP to the ISP and all the accounts hosted on the old 5.5 server. This should work ok. However as soon as I 'move' or create a new email account on the 2003 server then the 5.5 server needs to 'know' that that specific account is hosted on the 2003 server. This is the problem. I want to slowly migrate over the accounts to the 2003 server from the 5.5 server but how does the routing work so both servers know what accounts are found where. All accounts of course have the @williams.co.uk (Please note this is a fictitious adress for illustrative purposes only).

Ah the silience ...

Ok lets look at it this way.

I have two exchange servers. One 5.5 the other 2003. I have email USER1 on the 5.5 and USER2 on the 2003. The domain is the same for both lets say williams.co.uk. I want to send emails between the two users and for Exchange to sort out the routing. If either decide to send an email to an external source I want either the 5.5 or 2003 to deal with it SMTP feed.

What do I need to do to 'connect' the two Exchange Servers so that mail can flow between them.
