greygoose -> Will Exchange 12 support migration from 5.5? (25.Jan.2006 8:32:19 PM)

I don't think so based upon this quote from the Exchange team blog:

"So how will migration work? The first thing to understand is that we are totally committed to full interop with E2K and E2K3 topologies. In fact, here at Microsoft we have 3000 people running on E12, with the remainder on E2K3 or even a few on E2K (for our sustained engineering team)."

I also don't think that it is supported because the support from 5.5 has run out.

However, I'd like to see if there is any migration information out from Exchange 12.

I don't have any articles to point at. But what I have been told by different sources at MS is that it will not be supported. And considering that Exchange 5.5 support has ended, it seems fair. I think it can be a driver to get the last 5.5 customer to upgrade their servers to Exchange 2003 now.

But if the Exchange 5.5 install base is too big when E12 gets closer to RTM, I wouldn't be suprised if they might changes their minds [:)]

Actually there's a Migrating from Exchange 5.5 topic in the E12 Help file, but of course it's still empty...

The answer is NO....

MS will not develop any migration tools to migrate from exchange 5.5 to E12, and why should they for a 10 year old product?

We have enough material available in the net that tells us the structure of E12 and i see that even if it is a close cousin of E2k / E2k3 models its way too different in features.

Theory says since its AD and E12 we should be able to run the ADC tool to get something going between the Exchange 5.5 server and AD but i am sure they are not willing to include the SRS part to enable full fledged migration from Exchange 5.5 to E12.

Although we do have the best and the most reliable method of migration, that's by taking PST's of users and importing them on to the new server.

Where did you get the source for your answer of "No"?

Its basic, why support when they have already stopped support for E55.

E12 would only be shipped in 64 bit versions; this means making E12 compatible to run applications that integrate with 32 bit applications would be difficult.

I do have couple of friends who have repetedly told me MS will not support E55 to E12 migration (MS resource)

Business sense says it is not feasible.

If E12 cannot integrate with 32 bit applications, how are people going to migrate from 2000 and 2003 to E12?

I agree that it doesn't make business sense to allow for 5.5 to E12 migration, however, I was looking for more concrete information than rumours.

Hold on my friend, let me get you specific information.

But for now you may want to check out the public link below;

http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/preview/faq.mspx

Which talks about E12, and look what i found;

Q.
Does Exchange "12" x64 mean that upgrades from Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 will be difficult?

A.

Microsoft is investing heavily in consolidating and improving migration tools so that the experience of moving from Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 to Exchange "12" will be a smooth transition. In addition, Exchange "12" will support mixed environments that include Exchange 2000 Server and/or Exchange Server 2003, allowing an easier and more gradual upgrade path. More detailed upgrade information and resources will be made available through this site and Exchange TechCenter later in 2006.

So the above statement by microsoft is a clear indication that they will support migration for exchange 200X.

But you don't know for a fact as the Exchange team haven't come up with a straight answer yet, an since the Migrating from Exchange 5.5 section in the E12 help file has been written yet.

Let's hear who those MS resources are?

SpikeZ1 -> RE: Will Exchange 12 support migration from 5.5? (4.Apr.2006 5:57:04 PM)

There is a man or indeed a woman perhaps at the Quest HQ slowly rubbing their hands together!

E12 installation docs say it cant be installed into an org with 5.5 servers, however, can MS afford to walk away from that userbase? Its great working in a global corporation where I get an MSDN subscription bought for me and spend all my days "fannying about" as my boss has said once or twice, but I know that there is still a very large 5.5 community out there.

To be honest, I still have the install cd's for 5.5 in my travel cd pack. I can also admit that there has been many a 5.5 server find itself installed in a DMZ as a gateway server. It just means I now have to go replace them all with E12 gateway servers now.

With toys like E12 around the corner......who couldnt enjoy their job? Right Im off for a pie.
